While I was standing at the kitchen window, five-year-old Spencer,

Take care about those who use
the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but
leaves out important information that should be included, he can make a false
impression. For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on
the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and
turned it in for one hundred dollars!”
This guy is a winner, right?
Maybe, maybe not. We then discovered that he bought two hundred tickets, and
only one was a winner. He is really a big loser! He didn’t say anything that
was false, but he intentionally left out important information. That’s called a
half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as
dishonest.
Untrustworthy candidates (候选人) in political
campaigns often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last
term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she
seeks another term. One of her opponents (对手.) runs an ad. saying,
“During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true.
However an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the
state had a net gain of two million jobs.”
Advertisers will sometimes
use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to
mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast (吹嘘), “Nine out of ten doctors
recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples. It fails to mention that they only
asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.”
This kind of trick happens
too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can
lie as well.
56. Which of the
statements is true according to the article?
A. All advertisements are
lies.
B. You can’t trust anyone
who tells the truth.
C. The truth can be used in
dishonest ways.
D. Whenever people tell the
truth, they are really lying.
57. What does the

fool
D.
win

A. believe in
nobody
B. vote for
female candidates
C. stay away from
political campaigns
D. think
carefully about what they read and hear

best title for this article?
A. Everyone Lies
at Present
B.
Lying with the Truth
C. Try to Be
Honest to the People D.
Don’t Believe People Who Tell the Truth

The business of on-line shopping so far has been disappointing for
the pioneering retailers(零售商)who are already offering their services. The problem is that
consumers, who say they are interested in the services, are mostly “just
looking”.
The Internet offers, among other things, an electronic “mall” with
scores of retailers selling everything from computer equipment to income tax
preparation services. As with anything on the Internet, it is highly
decentralized (分散),with no
one authority keeping track of transactions (交易), so reports of sales are largely inaccurate(不准确).But many of the reports are
discouraging.
But it is
far too soon to sound the death bell for electronic retailing. One reason, say
analysts and service providers, is that consumers are only beginning to
understand the possibilities of the new technology.
On-line
shopping is just the first link to a host of data bases and multimedia
services, allowing customers to research their purchases(购买)and communicate directly with
the seller for product service and support. The new services also promise
visuals of a quality equal to those on television.
Today, few
consumers have equipment in their homes capable of receiving such images and
data. But McKinsey & Co. the management consulting firm, estimates that the
electronic shopping business will reach $ 4 billion to $ 5 billion a year in
the United States by the year 2003. That supposes that just 11 percent
of US households will have the technology needed to make on line shopping work,
says George Desvaux, a McKinsey partner.
In the end,
the success of on-line shopping may turn on something as simple—and as complicated(复杂)—as changing the public’s idea
of how to shop. “The problem with consumers,” says Mr. Desvaux, “is that it is
very difficult for them to recognize whether or not they want a product until
they have already tried it.”
68. By “an
electronic mall”(in Line l,
Paragraph 2)the writer
refers to
.
A. the
pioneering small businesses
B. the
business transaction by a computer
C. a number
of functions a computer offers
D. a number
of shops offering services through a computer
69. On-line
shopping in the US has not been doing well mainly because .
A.
consumers only want to do research on some products
B.
consumers are not very familiar with the new technology
C.
consumers are not willing to spend money buying the equipment
D.
consumers only want to get some relevant(相关的)information about the product
70. In
on-line shopping, consumers are also able to .
A. do their
own research on all the products
B. meet the
seller on their televisions at home
C. see
quality goods on sale in all big companies
D. see the
products and the relevant data on their computers
71. The
underlined word “that”(in Paragraph 5)refers to .
A. McKinsey
& Co.’s estimates about the yearly sales of electronic shopping in the US
B. Mckinsey
& Co.’s estimates about on-line shopping in the US by 2003
C.
consumers having the right equipment at home by 2003
D. the
on-line shopping business in the US

The
next time you try for a high-ranking post, you could let your possible boss
listen to a recommending (推荐) phone
call “made” by US President George W. Bush or British Prime Minister Tony
Blair.
Of
course, neither of them could really do that for you—you
would just “borrow” their voices.
AT&T
labs will start selling speech software that it says is so good at reproducing
the sounds of a human voice that it can recreate voices and even bring the
voices of long—dead
famous people back to life.
The
software, which turns printed text into speech, makes it possible for a company
to use recordings of a person’s voice to say things that the person never
actually said.
Possible
customers for the software, which is priced in the thousands of dollars,
include telephone call centres, companies that make software that reads digital
(数字的)files aloud, and makers of automated voice
devices (装置). The
advances raise several problems. Who, for example, owns the rights to a famous
person’s voice? (Some experts even believe that new contracts (合同)
will be drawn that include voice—licensing
clauses.)
And
although scientists say the technology is not yet good enough to commit fraud (假冒)
, would the synthesized (合成的) voices
at last be able to trick people into thinking that they were getting phone
calls or digital audio recordings from people they know.
Even
Mr Fruchterman, one of AT&T lab’s possible first customers, said he
wondered what the new technology might bring. “Just like you can’t trust a
photograph anymore.” he said, “you won’t be able to trust a voice either.”
72. With
the help of the speech software, it is most possible_______.
A.
to improve a famous person’s speech
B.
to say what you want in another’s voice
C.
to make a speech much more easily
D.
to help you to find a better job
73. If
the speech software were widely used, _________.
A.
people would no longer believe each other
B.
it would not be necessary to go for a speech by a famous person
C.
no radio or TV broadcasters would be needed
D.
recording of a voice alone would not be taken as a proof in the court

to the passage, you can infer that _________.
A.
the software will turn out to be an immediate success in the market
B.
the government will forbid the sale of the software in the market
C.
it’s hard to decide whether the software will enjoy popularity
D.
the software will soon prove to be nothing but rubbish
75. The
passage mainly wants to _________.
A.

W: Ah, I know it.
W: Have you ever used a
washing machine before?
M: No, not this kind. Could
you tell me how to operate it?
W: Well, it’s really simple.
The instructions are under the cover. OK, let me show you how it works, anyway.
M: Oh, good.
W: You put the clothes in the
top. Remember not to put too many clothes in the machine so that you get a good
wash.
M: Should I also choose the
water temperature I want?
W: Yes, cold for colors and
woolens, hot for whites, and warm for silk. At last, you need one dollar to
operate the machine.
M: Oh, I got it. Thanks a
lot.
W: Excuse me, sir. Have all
the cases come here yet?
M: I think so. Can I help
you?
W: I’ve been waiting for my
baggage for 45 minutes, I have only a few minutes left to catch the plane to
Birmingham.
M: Please wait a minute.
W: Thanks.
M: Sorry, your cases are left
behind in Pairs. They won’t arrive in New York until later this evening.
W: Oh, it’s terrible. I’ll
miss by plane.
M: We’re sorry for it, madam.
Our company will pay the bill for your stay in the hotel tonight. You can get a
flight to Birmingham early tomorrow morning.
M: Sit down, please, Susan.
Do you want to tell me something?
W: Yes, Manager. I’m going to
get married next month and…
M: Get married? I didn’t know
that. Congratulations!
W: Thank you. But I’m afraid
it means I’ve got to give up my job. I’d like to leave at the end of the month.
M: Really? I’m sorry to hear
that. Do you want to stop working then?
W: Oh, no. It isn’t that I
don’t like my job here. You know, Manager. My boyfriend is a Japanese.
M: Japanese? I’m sorry, I
don’t understand. What’s that got to do with it?
W: Well, we’re both going to
live in Japan as soon as we get married. My boyfriend will work in a university
and I will teach the college students there. And we have more time together and
take care of each other.
M: Though our company suffers
letting you leave, still may you both be happy.
W: Hello! This is Barcelona
Sandy Hotel.
M: Hello! This is Clements,
Hill Clements. I’d like 3 rooms for 4 nights.
W: Yeah. 4 nights. Double
Room or Single?
M: Single please. And I will
check in on December 19. Could you please send a car to pick us up at the
airport? W: No problem. Flight Number, please?
M: FR 657. Taking
off time at 12:50. It might take up 5 hours to arrive at your airport.
Oh…Could you serve us two cars? We have quite a few bags.
W: Yes, sir. Let me check it.
3 rooms 4 nights. From 19th on. Two cars needed. Is that right?
M: And Hill Clements. Thanks.
W: Have a nice journey. See
you!
Yesterday morning,
Helen, our young English teacher, was asking us to read a passage. “The
Language of the Honey Bee” when a brown bee flew through an open window and
into our classroom. The little flying object attracted our attention and we all
turned to watching it flying about. It seemed to be flying hurriedly to find a
way out. “Catch it!” someone shouted. A boy threw his book to it but failed.
The bee flew to the girl next to me. she screamed out. We were all excited but
afraid—afraid of the bee and afraid of Helen. Suddenly, the bee landed on
Helen’s left ear! She screamed too and waved her hands, jumping! “Ouch!” she
cried out. “The bee gave me a shoot!” The bee was beaten to death in her hand
but her ear was soon becoming larger and redder. Just then, the class was over.
We gathered around her and asked, “What did the bee you indeed?” “It told me
that I should ask you all to recite the whole text!” She answered. All of us
left silently.
