The art of pleasing is a very necessary one to possess; but a very difficult one to get. It can hardly be reduced to rules; and your own good sense and observation will teach you more of it than I can. Do as you would be done by, is the surest method that I know of pleasing. Observe carefully what pleases you in others, and probably the same things in you will please others. If you are pleased with the friendliness and attention of others to your humors, your tastes, or your weaknesses, depend upon it. The same friendliness and attention, on your part, to theirs will equally please them. Take the tone of the company, that you are in, and do not pretend to give it;be serious, gay, as you find the present humor of the company. Do not tell stories in company; there is nothing more boring and unpleasant; if by any chance you know a very short story, and suitable to the present subject of conversation, tell it in as few words as possible; and even then, how that you do not love to tell stories; but that the shortness of it attracted you. Of all things, dismiss the egotism(自大) from your conversation, and never think of entertaining people with your own personal concerns, or private affairs; though they are interesting to you, they are impolite and uninteresting to everybody else; besides that, one cannot keep one’s own private affairs too secret. Whatever you think your own excellencies may be, do not show them in company; nor take the trouble, as many people do, to give that to the conversation. If they are real, they will surely be discovered some day, without your pointing them out yourself, and with much more advantage. Never continue an argument with heat and shout, though you think or know yourself to be in the right; but give your opinion modestly(谦虚地) and cooly, which is the only way to persuade; and, if that does not do, try to change the conversation, by saying with good humor, “We shall hardly persuade one another, nor is it necessary that we should, so let us talk of something else.”
60.According to this passage, what does the author suggest to us to please people?
  A. Try to make others pleased with your friendliness.
  B. Remember what you are pleased with may be the same thing you could do to please others.
  C. Forget who you are and do everything other people like.
  D. Speak in a pleasing tone in company while you feel unhappy.
61. What is the author’s opinion of private affairs?
  A. One shouldn’t keep his own private affairs secret.
  B. One’s private affairs can surely entertain others.
  C. One can talk with other people about his interesting private affairs.
  D. One should keep his private affairs as secret as possible.
62. What is the author’s suggestion about what to do with argument?
  A. If one knows that he is in the right, he may continue the argument with heat.
  B. Do not change the conversation unless you persuade the others.
  C. If you are not quite confident in yourself, give your opinion modestly.
  D. Talk something else when you can’t persuade the others.
63. What is the best title of this passage?
  A. The Art of Pleasing.           B. What One Should Talk about in Company
  C. Getting Rid of Egotism.         D. The Art of Speech.

Sabeer Bhatia is having a good decade (period of ten years) .Less than 10 years after leaving India to study in the United States, he has become most valuable in Silicon(硅) Valley for his e-mail service Hotmail. Like fine food, good writing is something we approach with pleasure and enjoy from the first taste to the last. And good writers, like good cooks, do not suddenly appear full-blown. Quite the opposite, just as the cook has to undergo a particular training, mastering the skills of his trade, the writer must sit at his desk and devote long hours to achieving a style in his writing, whatever its purpose is---school work, matters of business, or purely social communication. You may be sure that the Bore painstaking the effort, the more effective the writing, and the more rewarding.
There are still some faraway places in the world where you might find a public scribe to do your business or social writing for you, for money. There are a few managers who are lucky enough to have the service of that rare kind of secretary who can take care of all sorts of letter writing with no more than a quick note to work from. But for most of us, if there is any writing to be done, we have to do it ourselves.
We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to papers. It would be difficult to count the number of such words, messages, letters, and reports put into mails or delivered by hand, but the daily figures must be extremely large. What is more, everyone who writes expects, or at least hopes whatever he writes will be read, from first word to last, not just thrown into some “letters-to-be-read” files or into a wastepaper basket. This is the reason we bend our efforts toward learning and practicing the skills of interesting, effective writing.
72. In this passage, good writing is compared to fine food because ___ .
  A. both are enjoyable             B. both are hard to learn
  C. both are necessary to life           D. both take a long time to prepare
73. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
  A. Writing skills are less important than experience.
  B. A good writer should have his own way of writing.
  C. A good writer should learn to write all kinds of articles.
  D. The more efforts one makes, the more money one can earn.
74. The author thinks that the most important reason for us to practice writing skills is___.
  A. to earn our living             B. to attract others to read
  C. to do daily reports easily          D. to become good secretaries
75. The purpose of the author in writing this passage is to ______.
  A. comment and blame             B. introduce and describe
  C. explain and persuade            D. interest and inform

One possible version:
Li Fang is an excellent student. She lives near her school. One night, the wind was blowing the window so heavily that the noise woke up Li Fang. She knew a heavy rain would soon arrive. She thought of her classroom. She got up and put on her clothes. It was then 2 o’clock. She decided to get to the school before the storm came. She opened the door, and rushed out into the dark. The strong wind made it difficult for her to go forward quickly. In spite of this, she got to her classroom and opened the door. Oh, dear! All the windows were open, and the strong wind filled the classroom with great noises. Quickly she shut up all the windows and turned off the lights. Just then it began to rain heavily. When she got home, it was already half past three.

M: Because people nowadays eat too much meat and it’s healthier to eat less.
W: Is this another one of your crazy ideas? It won’t last a week. Last month, in order to lose weight, you decided to jog to work every morning. That only lasted a week because you were late for work every day.
M: That’s not the reason why I stopped! I stopped jogging because I pulled a muscle in my leg.
W: Well, what about the bicycle?
M: What bicycle?
W: Exactly! You can hardly remember you own a bike as it’s been locked away in the garage ever since you bought it.
M: That’s not completely true. As soon as the weather improves, I’m going to start using it again.

M: Well, how did you enjoy your seaside trip?
W: It was fun.
M: Tell me about it.
W: Well, we drove through the valley on our way there in the morning. It was a wonderful sight.
M: Did you stop at the big waterfall for pictures?
W: Sure, we wouldn’t miss it for anything. After that, we took a short cut to the park. There was little traffic, so we got there in less than an hour and we spent the whole morning under the tall trees. We had our picnic there, too.
M: You were lucky then. What did you do after that?
W: We went for a swim in the sea. That was the best of the day, and just look at my nice tan.
M: So you must have had a busy and enjoyable day yesterday.
W: Yes, you’re right. And I was so tired that I fell asleep on the way back. My muscles are still aching from the swim yesterday.

W:Excuse me. I’m really sorry to bother you but I do have a question.
M: It’s no trouble at all.
W: I found some books in the card catalog I’d like to borrow. How do I get the books?
M: I’m sorry; I should have explained that before. Take this “call slip” and fill it out with the call number, title and author of the book and your name, address, phone and ID number.
W: What do I do once I’ve filled out the call slip?
M: Then you can search for the book yourself, using the call number as your guide as the books are arranged numerically by call numbers.
W: Can’t I ask a librarian to find it for me?
M: Sure. But they are often very busy. By browsing, you might also find other materials which are of interest to you.
W: OK. Thanks a lot.
Text 9
M: Excuse me. I’m new in this apartment building. Could I ask you some of the rules here?
W: Yes, of course.
M: First, about the parking. Is it OK to leave my car behind the building?
W: Sure. You’ll see some parking spaces there for the people living in this building.
M: And what about when I have guests?
W: Well, guests aren’t allowed to leave their cars in the back. They have to park their cars in the guest parking area in the front.
M: I see. And are there any rules about house pets? Am I allowed to have a dog, for instance?
W: Yes, both cats and dogs are allowed.
M: What about the waste material?
W: It has to be taken to the ground floor where it is collected every five hours.
M: All right, fine. And do I have to use those special plastic bags for the garbage?
W: No, that’s not necessary. You can use the paper ones you get from the supermarket.
M: Thank you very much.
Text 10
A young lady was on vacation in Louisiana. She wanted a pair of alligator shoes, but was very unwilling to pay the high prices the local shopkeepers were asking. After becoming disappointed when she failed to get one pair at a bargain price, the lady shouted, “Maybe I’ll just go out and catch my own alligator so I can get a pair of shoes at a reasonable price!” The shopkeeper said, “Of course. Maybe you’ll luck out and catch yourself a big one!” Determined, the lady turned and headed for the river, set on catching herself an alligator.
Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, when he saw the young woman standing waist deep in the water, shotgun in hand. Just then, he noticed a huge 9-foot alligator swimming quickly toward her. She took aim, killed the creature, and with a great deal of effort pulled it on to the bank. Lying nearby were several more of the dead creatures. The shopkeeper watched in astonishment. Just then the lady turned the alligator on its back, and shouted out in disappointment, “Damn it, this one isn’t wearing any shoes either!”
