LONDON--- “Everyone else has one!” Lucy declared to her parents,
trying to get a mobile phone as a gift for her 14th birthday. Her parents gave
in.
Curious to know how her daughter would use the phone, Jane Bidder,
the mother, followed Lucy to the school bus in the morning. The bus seats 20,
of whom half have a mobile phone. One rings and several adolescent owners fumble
with their bags.
Many parents
have just come to realize that the mobile phone is no longer only for
travelling businessmen—it is as likely to be found in school bags.
The mobile phone seems to have become something essential for
today’s teens in Britain, according to a survey published last week, by NOP, a
leading market research company in Britain. Research found that 66 per cent of
16 -year- olds now have access to a mobile phone.
The mobile phone has been turned into a secret messaging service by
teen users. When they are talking on the mobile, their parents are not able to eavesdrop
on the second line.
The interviews with 2,019 young people aged 7 to 16 found that they
favour the text messaging services because they offer a secret way of keeping
in touch. The days of secret notes in the classroom are dying out.
For example, “cya” means “see you”; “lol” means “aughs out loud”;
and “2nite” is an abbreviation of “tonight”. All these are based on shorthand
phrases used on the Internet.
Many schools have banned students using mobile phones. But they are
not very successful. Still phones ring in the class and disturb study.
Besides, people are worried about the health risk to kids using
mobile phones.
Scientists believe children are especially vulnerable (易受伤害的) to the mobile radiation.

Most
episodes(情况)of
absent- mindedness- forgetting where you left something or wondering why you
just entered a room-are caused by a simple lack of attention, says Schacter.
“You’re supposed to remember something, but you haven’t encoded (译成密码)it
deeply.”
Encoding,
Schacter explains, is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a
major impact(影响)on
recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations.
If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don’t pay attention
to what you did because you’re involved in a conversation, you’ll probably
forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe(衣柜).
“Your memory itself isn’t failing you,” says Schacter. “Rather, you didn’t give
your memory system the information it needed.”
Lack
of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness. “A man who can recite sports
statistics from 30 years ago,” says Zelinski, “may not remember to drop a
letter in the mailbox.” Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly
because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory depends on
just that.
“Visual
cues can help prevent absent –mindedness”, says Schacter. “But be sure the cue
is clear and available,” he cautions. If you want to remember to take a
medication(药物)with
lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table-don’t leave it in the medicine
chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.
Another
common episode of absent-mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why
you’re there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. “Everyone
does this from time to time,” says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return
to where you were before entering the room, and you’ll likely remember.
64.
We can learn from the passage that encoding ________.
A. slows
down the process of losing our memories
B. helps us
understand our memory system better
C. gets us
to recall something from our memories
D. helps us
to find out the mobile phone in the pocket
65.
Why do women have better memories than men?
A. They
seldom use their mobile phones.
B. They are
more nervous about the environment.
C. They are
more interested in what’s happening around them.
D. They
usually take some special medicine to improve memories.
66.
The sentence underlined in Paragraph 4 means that ___________.
A. a note
in the pocket will easily get lost
B. putting
something in sight can be a good reminder
C. taking
medicine can get rid of absent-mindedness
D. people
of absent-mindedness must take medicine with them
67.
What is the passage mainly about?
A. The
causes of absent-mindedness.
B. The environment and
memory.
C. A way of
encoding and recalling.
D. The process of
gradual memory loss.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want a real life filled with love.
In order for this to happen, the effort must start within us. Rather than
waiting for other people to provide the love we desire, we must be a vision
and source of love. We must tap into our own loving-kindness in order to set an
example for others to follow.
It has been said that “ the shortest distance between two points is
an intention.”This is certainly true with regard to a life filled with love.
The starting point or foundation of a life filled with love is the desire and
commitment to be a source of love. Our attitude, choices, acts of kindness, and
willingness to be the first reach-out will take us toward this goal.
The next time you find yourself frustrated(受挫)at the lack of love in your own
life or at the lack of love in the world, try an experiment. Forget about the
world and other people for a few minutes. Instead, look into your own heart.
Can you become a source of greater love? Can you think loving thoughts for
yourself and others? Can you extend these loving thoughts outward the rest of
the world—even to people whom you feel don t deserve it?
By opening your heart to the possibility of greater love, and by
making yourself a source of love( rather than getting love) as a top priority (重点), you will be taking an important
step in getting the love you desire. You’11 also discover something truly
remarkable. The more love you give, the more you will receive. As you put more
emphasis on being a loving person, which is something you can control—and less
emphasis on receiving love, which is something you can’t control—you’ll find
that you have plenty of love in your life. Soon you’11 discover one of the
greatest secrets in the world: Love is its own reward.
72.

life with love

you should _______.
A. forget
all about the unhappy things
B. try hard
to get more love from others
C. try to
make yourself a great source of love
D. care for
yourself instead of others
74. According to the idea of the passage, you will find plenty of
love in your life as _______.
A. you
become a loving person
B.
you become a loved person
C. you
discovered the secrets in the world
D.
you forget the world and other people

M: I can’t find my new tie. I
need it for tonight’s party.
W: Let’s look for it later.
Right now I need your help fixing this shelf before I paint it.
W: If you had listened to me,
we’d be at the party. Move over. I’ll drive.
M: I was sure I knew the way
there. I’ll turn around.
W: Nick, why don’t you come
and join us this afternoon? There’ll be a lot of fun.
M: I’d love to, but I’ve got
an exam.
W: What about tomorrow
afternoon?
M: Saturday is OK.
M: Gary, will you please pick
up little Tom from the school?
W: I’m sorry. I’m afraid not.
M: Why?
W: A patient has just
arrived. He was badly hurt in a traffic accident. I’m going to operate on him
at once.
W: David said he bought a new
car for five thousand dollars.
M: What kind is it?
W: A BMW---I’m not sure what
model.
M: Are you sure? A BMW for
five thousand? Sounds pretty cheap to me!
M: Excuse me, are
you a college student?
W: Yes, I am. What
about you?
M: Me, too.
Forgive my asking you, but do you have to take a part’time job in the holidays?
W: Not really. My
parents are fairly well off, so I get money from my father.
M: You’re lucky,
aren’t you?
W: I think so.
What about you? Are your parents wealthy?
M: No, certainly
not.
W: Do you work
during the holidays?
M: Well, last Christmas
I did for two weeks as a postman and a door-to-door salesman. Then in the summer
I spent four weeks fruit picking, and I do a bit of baby-sitting.
W: Can you get
enough money to finish your education by taking part-time jobs?
M: Of course not. But
I’m a top student and I can get a scholarship, from the college.
W: Where do you
live then?
M: I share a flat
with two other boys. It’s not large but fairly tidy, and the most important
point is that the rent is quite low.
W: Sounds not bad.
Uh, this is my phone number. Call me if you have any problems.
M: Thanks a lot.

W: Fifty cents
M: Does this bus go past the zoo?
W: That’s right. Move along, please. There
are more people waiting to get on.
M: Would you tell me when we get
there?
W: Better watch for it yourself. I might
forget.
M: How will I recognize it?
W: Just watch for the big gate. Get off the
bus when we get there.
M: Thanks a lot.
W: That’s OK,

M: Hello, Yang Mei. I hear you’re going to
the United States.
W: Yes, I’m going with my grandma. We’re going
to see my parents in New Jersey.
M: When are you leaving, then?
W: This Friday evening. Our plane leaves at
seven fifteen.
M: How long will you be there?
W: Six months.
M: Six months! Do go and see my
grandparents in New York, please.
W: Of course, I will. I want to see as many
places as I can. How can I travel?
M: Most people travel by car. The roads are
very good.
W: But I don’t have a car and I can’t
drive. Is there any other way to travel?
M: Most people travel by car. The roads are
very good.
W: But I don’t have a car and I can’t drive.
Is there any other way to travel?
M: You can travel by bus. It’s very
cheap.
W: Can’t I travel by train?
M: Yes, you can. The train is expensive in
the states, but it’s fast.
W: Thank you very much. Well, I must be off
now, See you when I get hack.
M: Good luck and have a good trip.
M: Hello, what
seems to be the problem?
W: Well, I’m not feeling very
well at the moment. I’m preparing for exams and I’ve been staying up late at
night studying. This morning I got up very early to do some more work, and I
fell onto the floor. I came around after a few seconds.
M: Mm. Have you
had any other signs?
W: I’ve been
pretty nervous and my eyes hurt sometimes.
M: Well, it sounds as if
you’ve probably been overdoing your study and you’re too tired. I don’t think
there’s anything to worry about, but I think you should take it easy for a
while and try to get plenty of sleep.
W: Yes, I haven’t
been getting much sleep lately.

It was a bit of bad luck when
the man’s car broke down--- he was stuck in a no-parking area. So he went into
a store to borrow a pen and paper to leave a note for the traffic police. The pen,
however, was like his car. It didn’t work. When he decided to go back to the store
to buy a pen, he found another little problem. He only had a $ 50 bill and the
salesman couldn’t change it. So he went off to find a bank to change the bill
to buy the pen to write on the paper to put on his car to tell the traffic
police that his car had broken down. As he left the bank he saw a phone box. He
decided to call a garage to send a truck to pull the car away, but the number
was busy. When he got back to his car he found a parking ticket on the car. The
story has, however, a happy ending. The driver wrote to the police station to
explain what had happened. The police officer who read the letter decided not
to punish him with the $ 20 parking fine. She said that even if the man’s story
was not true, it was so clever he could be excused from being fined!
