For Jennifer, the word ceramics (制陶术) usually reminded her about pottery (陶器). Today as she listened to Dr. Kramer, the word took on a new sense. “Your aunt has broken the bone in her hip, Jennifer. Age has taken its tax on her bone structure, so we need to replace her hip with a new one made out of ceramics and metal. I’ve described the program to your aunt, and now she must decide if she wants to undergo surgery (接受手术).” Jennifer was unsettled by Dr. Kramer’s advice. However, her mind was set at ease when she heard her aunt say, “A ceramic hip is no big deal, Jennifer! Why, there are people who’ve lost arms and legs and now have artificial (人造的) limbs (肢) that work nearly as well as the natural ones. There are artificial hearts for people whose hearts have failed to work properly. All these advances offer new life for folks like me.” “Aunt Nancy, you sound like a medical advertisement,” Jennifer interrupted. “From now on, I’ll call you my robot-aunt!” “I like that!” Aunt Nancy said, “Never doubt that your robot-aunt would prefer having a natural hip, but if it’s a choice between a useless hip and a useful one, then I’ll take the artificial one.”

In many developing countries, it is difficult to keep food cool. Most areas do not have electricity to operate the devices, called refrigerators, to keep food cold. Within days, food often spoils or becomes unsafe to eat. This can cause disease and loss of money for farmers. However, in Nigeria, one man is working to change this.
Mohammed Bah Abba, a teacher, invented a cooling device using two round containers made of clay. Mr. Abba’s invention is called a Pot-in-Pot Preservation Cooling System. A small spot is placed inside a larger one. The space between the two pots is filled with wet sand. The inner pot can be filled with fruit, vegetables or drinks. A wet cloth covers the whole cooling system. The device keeps some foods fresh for several weeks.
Food stored in the small pot is kept from spoiling through a simple evaporation process (过程).Water in the sand between the two pots evaporates through the surface of the larger pot where drier outside air is moving. The evaporation process causes a drop in temperature of several degrees. This cools the inner container and helps destroy harmful bacteria found in food.
Mr. Abba started producing his cooling device in 1997.Since then, he has given more than 20,000 devices to people in villages in Nigeria. He expects that within five years, people all over the country will be using his invention. Mr. Abba also hopes to export his Pot-in-Pot cooling system to other hot, dry nations facing similar problems.
The Rolex Watch Company of Switzerland has also recognized the value of this cooling system. Two years ago, Mr. Abba received the Rolex Award(奖赏) for Enterprise. This award is given every two years. It awards people trying to develop projects aimed at improving human knowledge and well-being. Winners receive financial assistance to help develop their projects.

“It hurts me more than you”, and “This is for your own good”—these are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.
That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy for us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.
Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students—“so passive”—and wonders what has happened. Nothing is demanded of them, she believes. Television, says Klompus, contributes to children’s passivity. “We’re talking about a generation of kids who’ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them, instead of saying ‘go and look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”
Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It’ s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It’s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’s for their own good. It’s s time to start telling them no again.
64. Children are becoming more inactive in study because       .
A. they watch TV too often            B. they have done too much homework
C. they have to fulfil too many duties    D. teachers are too strict with them
65. We learn from the passage that the author’s mother used to lay emphasis on    .
A. learning Latin                    B. discipline
C. natural development                D. education at school
66. By “permissive period in education”(L.1,Para.2)the author means a time     .
A. when children are allowed to do what they wish to
B. when everything can be taught at school
C. when every child can be educated
D. when children are permitted to receive education
67. The main idea of the passage is that     .
A. parents should leave their children alone
B. kids should have more activities at school
C. it’s time to be more strict with our kids
D. parents should always set a good example to their kids
Take care about those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can make a false impression. For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”
This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discovered that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He is really a big loser! He didn’t say anything that was false, but he intentionally left out important information. That’s called a half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Untrustworthy candidates (候选人) in political campaigns often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents (对手.) runs an ad, saying, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. However an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast (吹嘘), “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples. It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.”
This kind of trick happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
68. Which of the statements is true according to the article?
A. All advertisements are lies.
B. You can’t trust anyone who tells the truth.
C. The truth can be used in dishonest ways.
D. Whenever people tell the truth, they are really lying.
69. What does the underlined word “deceive” probably mean?
A. tell          B. explain        C. fool         D. win
70. The writer suggests in this article that people should ________.
A. believe in nobody
B. vote for female candidates
C. stay away from political campaigns
D. think carefully about what they read and hear
71. What is the best title for this article?
A. Everyone Lies at Present
B. Lying with the Truth
C. Try to Be Honest to the People
    D. Don’t Believe People Who Tell the Truth

As can be seen from the chart, great changes have been taking place in the ownership of mobile phones in China. At the end of 2002, there were 20 million mobile users. By the year 2005, the number will reach up to 30 million.
People have found mobile phones very convenient. They can get in touch with each other whenever and wherever they like. There are many different functions for different needs, such as sending short messages and surfing the Internet. However, it may also bring us some trouble. For example, you will have to pay for a wrong number, and the radiation from the phone may do harm to our health. In spite of this, the number of people having mobile phones is still increasing steadily.

W: 45 minutes, I think, with a 10 or 15 minutes’ break.
M: Well, I hear that lunchtime is nearly 12 o’clock and I’ll be starving by then.
W: Don’t worry. During the break after the second class, we can buy something to eat.
M: That’s good.
Text 8
M: Mrs Smith, we’re very pleased that you want to work for our company. I wonder if you’d be interested in working in India.
W: India? But I’ve lived there. I was there for four years.
M: How about Brazil?
W: Brazil?No, I’ve worked there.
M: Well ,would you consider the Middle East?
W: Certainly not. I’ve worked there, too. I spent three years there.
M: Well, there’s China, perhaps.
W: No, not China. I’ve seen China.
M: It’s a big country.
W: Yes, and I’ve lived there for a long time. Can’t you find any other country?
M: Well, there’s this island in the Pacific.
W: Island?Which island?I’ve lived there.
M: But, Mrs Smith, there are thousands of islands, as we all know.
W: Well, I’ve seen them all. Really, can’t you let me go to a different country from those you’ve mentioned?
Text 9
M: Well, this is it! What do you think of it?
W: I can hardly believe it’s real. I’ve dreamed of seeing it ever since I saw it in books when I was a child. Just think of all this being built by hand more than 2000 years ago! No wonder it’s one of the wonders of the world.
M: Actually it was started more than 2500 years ago, when China was divided into various states. Three of the northern states built defensive walls along the borders to keep off the enemies.
W: But I thought the wall had always been built by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China.
M: Well, yes. You see he united the whole country in the third century BC, and one of the things he did was to join the departed walls into one wall and built more walls from the East Coast right across the length of north China to the west.
W: It is certainly something any nation could be proud of. I hear this is the only human construction on earth that can be seen from the moon. By the way, how high is the wall?
M: The average height is 7 meters, the average width is 6.5 meters at the base and 5.8 at the top. Would you like to go to the top?
W: Yes!I’d like to have a look from the top.
Text 10
Miss Jenkins was born in a rich family. She liked all the foods which were rich in fat and sugar. So she got fatter and fatter. Her workmates often laughed at her for it. She was angry with them and couldn’t get on well with them. But her weight brought her some trouble. No young man liked a fat girl like her and now she was more than thirty, she had to live alone. She went to see the doctors. They gave her a list of the healthy diets and advised her to lose weight and of course it was difficult for her to do so. For example, it was her birthday one day. She went to a restaurant and bought a nice cake. The waiter asked her how many pieces she wanted him to cut it into. She thought for a while and said she was losing her weight so the cake would be cut only into two, not into six.
