Colorado---When

he had an extra $ 1.2 million in his account (帐户), the news sure got his interest.
He
knew all those zeros weren’t his, though. And he’d always told his children to
be honest, so his decision was clear.
“I
only want money I earn,” the store owner said.
The
too-much- money problem came up as he made a regular deposit(存款) to his account at Norwest Bank
last month.
Bev
Raveotta, a bank spokeswoman, said the teller who took his deposit accidentally
hit some extra keys, producing “more zeros”.
He asked for his current
balance and was told he was a millionaire. Later that day, he called the banks
accounting department, which told him the same thing. When he insisted the
money wasnt his, he said he was told, “It’s your money. Take it.”

Everywhere there are plenty of
pubs, in which people play darts, talk and drink, usually while standing up. Every
pub has its name, its sign and its regulars, its customers who turn up
night after night. A few old pubs have real character but many are dull and
ugly. It seems that the English think it rather indecent(不像样的) for people to drink alcoholic drinks in
any place where they can be seen from outside, so pubs usually not only have no
tables outside, but are so built that it is impossible for people outside to see
in, or for those who are inside to see out. There are exceptions to this, but
not many. Pubs are meeting places for working men after the evening meal. With
pint glasses filled with beer—in Scotland the national drink
is whisky—they argue about football, the
races, cars….The traditional pub was a place for the men only. But things have
changed, and more and more pubs are now places where men and women sit at
tables, and they often provide good lunches. Most of them have a public bar, where
drinks are slightly cheaper, and a saloon bar, which middle class people
usually prefer because it is more comfortable and less crowded.
60. This passage mainly tells us
about______.
A. drinking habits of the English
B. poor conditions in pubs

text refers to ______.

Why, you may wonder, should
spiders be our friends? Because they destroy so many insects, and insects
include some of the greatest enemies of the human race. Insects would make it
impossible for us to live in the world; they would devour (吞食、毁灭) all our crops and kill our cattle, if
it were not for the protection we get from insect-eating animals. We owe a lot
to the birds and beats who eat insects, but all of them put together kill only
a very small amount of the number destroyed by spiders. Moreover, unlike some
of the insect eaters, spiders never do the least harm to us or our belongings.
Spiders are not insects, as
many people think, nor even nearly related to them. One can tell the difference
almost at a glance for a spider always has eight legs and an insect never more
than six.
How many spiders are engaged
in the work on our behalf? One authority on spiders made a research of the
spiders and found that there were more than 2,250,000 in one acre; that is
something like 6,000,000 spiders of different kinds on a football field.
Spiders are busy for at least half the year in killing insects. It is
impossible to make more than the wildest guess at how many they kill, but they
are hungry creatures, not content with only three meals a day. It has been
estimated that the weight of all the insects destroyed by the spiders in
Britain in one year would be greater than total weight of all human beings in
the country.
67. Spiders should be our friends,
because ______.
A. they only eat harmful
insects
B. they are great insect-eating
animals
C. they destroy large numbers
of insects which do harm to the human race
D. their harmfulness is the
least
68. The difference between spiders and
insects is that ______.
A. insects have only six legs B. insects
only eat plants
C. spiders eat insects
D.
spiders have more legs than insects
69. One authority on spiders estimated______.
A. that there were more than
2,250,000 insects in a grass field in the south of England
B. that every football field
in England had 6,000,000 spiders
C. the quantity of different
spiders in England was very big
D. that there were 6,000,000
kinds of spiders on a football field
70. In the last sentence the writer means
______.
A. experts on spiders know
exactly how much spiders eat in one year
B. experts on spiders can only
make an estimation of the weight of insects eaten by spiders
C. authority on spiders know
the weight of all the people in England.
D. authority on spiders know both the
weight of the insects eaten by spiders and the weight of people in England
71. Which one of the following statements
is the main idea?
A. Spiders, the greatest insects-eating
animals, protect us from being destroyed by harmful insects and they should be
our friends.
B. Spiders are not insects but
in fact animals.
C. There are great numbers of spiders
engaged in destroying harmful insects on behalf of the human race.
D. The weight of the insects eaten by
spiders in one year is greater than the weight of all people in England.

With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world ,China is desperately
trying to clone(克隆)the animal
and save the endangered species(物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University
researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called
“Noah’s Ark.”
Noah’s Ark is aimed at
collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎),semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid
nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a
professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would
be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the
future.
It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds
reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to
China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing
cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit.
They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire
procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer(核子移植)of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available
(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes.
“They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one
pregnancy(having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this
could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any
live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who it one of
the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning
a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is
very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that
face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can
learn form what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much
needed.”
72. The aim
of “Noah’s Ark” project is to ______.
A. make
efforts to clone the endangered pandas
B. save
endangered animals from dying out
C. collect
DNA of endangered animals to study
D. transfer
the nuclear of one animal to another
73. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning
pandas would be the lack to _____.
A. available
panda eggs B.
host animals
C. qualified
researchers D.
enough money
74. The best
title for the passage may be ______.
A. China’s
Success in Pandas Cloning
B. The First
Cloned Panda in the World
C. Exploring
the Possibility to Clone Pandas
D.
China---the Native Place of Pandas Forever
75. From the
passage we know that ______.
A. Kraemer
and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog
B.
scientists try to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit
C. Kraemer
will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches
D. about two
thousand of species will probably die out in a century

Dear friends,
Here are my points. We students of
today have to pay much attention to our lessons and know little of society
though it’s not our fault. A holiday is the best time to make up for that.
Taking a part-time job is a good form of social practice. What is learned in
books can’t have the same deep effect on us as what is learned through
experience. In social practice, we can surely make progress in both knowledge
and ability. Besides, taking a part-time job, we may get paid more or less to
help our family. Thus, I will say a senior school student should take a
part-time job in holidays, if possible, of course.

W: I still wish
he would get a new one.
Text 4
M: Why is Bob
looking so tired?
W: He has been
working day and night for the final exam. I told him many times to prepare
earlier but he wouldn’t listen.
W: Hey, John. Can
you turn that up a little, please?
M: Sure. Do you
like Beethoven?
W: Oh, yes.
M: So why not go
to the concert tonight?
M: Look at this!
Someone just won $10 million in the lottery! How come I never choose a winning
number?
W: Well, what
would you do if you won $10 million?
M: Me? Well,
first I’d quit my boring job at the bank. And then I’d buy a boat and sail
around the world!
W: That’s all?
I’d go straight to Monte Carlo and try my luck in the casinos. I bet I could
turn it into $ 20 million!
M: Yeah, and I
bet you would lose it all in a single day!
M: Can I help
you?
W: Yes, I’d like
to return this jacket.
M: Is there
something wrong with it?
W: Yes. I didn’t
notice when I bought it, but there are a few problems. First, it has a tear in
the lining.
M: Hmm. Actually,
it’s torn in several places.
W: And some of
the buttons are very loose. This one came off, in fact. And there’s a stain on
the collar.
M: I’m really
sorry about this. Would you like to exchange it for another one?
W: Well, to be
honest, I don’t think this jacket is very well made. I’d rather get my money
back.
M: I understand.
Do you have the receipt?
W: Have you
studied for the test tomorrow?
M: Yes, I have.
W: OK. Let me
quiz you on the Panama Canal.
M: All right. Go
ahead.
W: Who was the
canal built by?
M: It was started
by the French and completed by the Americans.
W: Right! And
when was it completed?
M: It was
completed in 1911.
W: No! It was
completed in 1914.
M: Oh, that’s
right.
W: Hello, Tom, do
you mean you’re going away?
M: Oh, yes. I’ve
booked the ticket. And it’s time for me to go back home.
W: Well, how long
have you been in China?
M: I’ve been here
for two years.
W: Did you enjoy
your stay?
M: Yes, indeed. I
should say I’ve had a wonderful time over the past two years. You and Xiao Fang
have given me a lot of help. People here are very friendly. Thank you all very
much.
W: When are you
leaving?
M: I’m off next
Sunday. Ive come to say goodbye today.
W: I’d like to
invite you to dinner before you go. What about Friday?
M: I’m free on
Friday. I’d like to come. Would you please ask Xiao Fang to be there, too?
W: Of course I
will.
Dear
Olga,
Christmas is
coming soon. The radio station is playing Christmas music, and the stores are
very busy. People are doing their Christmas shopping. Many families have
Christmas trees in their homes already. We are going to buy our tree a few days
before Christmas.
At this time of
the year we make or buy presents for our families. I am going to buy a record
for my elder brother. He listens to music all the time. I am going to make a
toy for my little brother.
Our
family is usually together on Christmas Day. My elder brother lives in another
town, but he always drives his car here. Last year, however, he didn’t come
because it was snowing very hard and the roads were too dangerous. We all felt
sad.
I hope we are
going to be together again this year. My elder brother is going to arrive
before Christmas Eve. Then we are going to put up the tree in the living room,
and we are going to decorate it. We put the presents under the tree. We don’t
open them until Christmas morning.
Do you celebrate
Christmas in your country? Write soon.
