A picture, a calendar
or even a balloon may be the best way for millions of people living in China’s
vast country areas to learn about AIDS, one of the biggest threats to public
health in the world today.
China has
decided to use user-friendly methods including exhibitions, VCD and TV
programmes to spread knowledge of the disease across the nation to try to
keep it in check.
Educating people nationwide about
AIDS is the top priority to prevent the disease from getting out of hand. The
farmers will be given knowledge in the easiest way that they can understand.
A recent survey from the commission
of more than 7,000people in China showed that nearly 20 percent of them had
never heard of AIDS before. Just over 71percent said they knew AIDS was highly
infectious, but most of them had no clear idea of how the disease could be
spread. Just over 62 percent said they knew that they could do things in
advance to prevent themselves catching AIDS but they didn’t know what these
measures were.
The month-long survey,
carried out last December, talked to people in seven counties and cities across
China including both developed coastal areas and the less-developed inland
areas. The interviewees ranged from 15 to 49 years old, and country residents
were about 63% of the total surveyed.
Chinese residents, especially those in
the country, have very little knowledge about what AIDS is all about, not to
mention prevention and treatment. By the end of last year, there were 22,517
known HIV/AIDS cases in China. However, more than 6,000,000 people in China
have been infected.
Since 1985, China has discovered 880
patients with AIDS --- 466 of them have died. Sharing needles, prostitution and
contaminated blood transfusions are major ways for HIV to spread. A lack of
education has been the biggest difficulty against nationwide efforts to prevent
AIDS, especially in the countryside.
56.According to the passage, we can know that ____________.

58. The
greatest difficulty against nationwide efforts to prevent AIDS lies in _____.

My aunt Edith was a widow(寡妇) of 50, working as a secretary,
when doctors discovered she had got what was then thought to be a very serious
heart illness.
Aunt Edith doesn’t accept defeat
easily. She began studying medical reports in the library and found an article
in a magazine about a well-known heart doctor, Dr Michael Debakey, in Houston,
Texas. He had saved the life of someone with the same illness. The article said
Dr Debakey’s fees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn’t possibly pay them. But
could he tell her of someone whose fees she could pay?
So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She
simply listed her reasons for wanting to live: her three children, who would be
on their own in three or four more years, and among them, a little girl who
always dreamed of traveling and seeing the world. There wasn’t a word of
self-pity-only warmth and humor and the joy of living. She mailed the
letter, not really expecting an answer.
A few days later, my doorbell
rang. Aunt Edith didn’t wait to come in; she stood in the hall and read aloud:
Your beautiful letter moved me
very deeply. If you can come to Houston, there will be no charge for either the
hospital or the operation.
That was seven years ago. Since
then, Aunt Edith has been around the world. Her three children are happily
married. For her age, she is one of the youngest, most lively people I know.
60.In fact, Aunt Edith’s letter to Dr Debakey was full of
__________.

Anybody running a
company knows that a well—planned conference can greatly improve performance of
that business.The main reason for
this is that it takes your employees away from the daily workplace and offers
them somewhere fresh for a short time. However, unless
the conference is well thought out it will not have the best results and you
will have wasted a great deal of money. Here are some tips for you.
The first
step is to find the right place. Can
your employees easily reach the conference center? Is it near a railway
station? Is it close to a good, fast
road? Has it plenty of suitable parking space? If you are going to choose a
hotel,then perhaps the hotel
has cheaper rates at weekends or,if
it is in a popular tourist area, midweek
rates may be cheaper.Furthermore, you need
to think whether there is a bathroom. After a day’s meeting, maybe your employees would like to have a hot water bath.Or maybe there are other needs to satisfy depending on your
employees’ taste.
Another
important requirement is food and drink.Breakfast is a time when people can relax before work
begins, but you may not want a
long break for lunch in the middle of the day.Buffet lunches are very popular for this reason. Then there is dinner, which most employees consider a reward for a day’s hard
work!
Whatever your needs are,it is essential to think ahead if you want a successful
conference.
62. In the text the writer is trying to ________.
A.complain about a conference center
B.describe what makes a good conference center

63. Readers read the text in order to __________.
A.find out about organizing conferences
B.learn how to reward good employees
C.find out about running a business
D.1earn some details about conference centers
64. What is very important when choosing a
conference center?

Frank Lloyd Wright probably is
the greatest architect that the United States has ever produced. He was very
gifted and had a natural ability to design buildings. His buildings were not
only beautiful, but they were also practical and useful. They fit their
purposes very well. Wright’s churches, for example, make people feel like
thinking and praying. His office buildings make people enjoy working, and his
houses make people feel comfortable, at home. However, Fank Lloyd Wright’s
beautiful, practical and useful buildings are not the only reason that he is
famous. There is another reason.
Frank Lloyd Wright is called the
greatest American architect because he started an American style in
architecture. Most of the architecture in the United States before Wright was
really European, not American. Wright’s buildings do not look like old European
buildings. They have their own style. Wright’s idea about style are still used
in the United States and in other parts of the world.
The most important idea in Frank
Lloyd Wright’s Style of Architecture is that a building must fit its purpose
and the land around it. His houses are often called “grass-land houses” because
their lines are similar to the lines on the grassland. Both the lines of the
grassland and the lines of Wright’s house are parallel to the horizon(与地平线平行), the place where
earth and sky seem to meet. They are horizontal lines. Most European style
houses, in contrast, have many vertical lines that form 90°angles with the
horizon.
66.Frank Lloyd Wright’s style in architecture was ________.
A.learned from some European
countries B.not only limited to the U.S
C.no longer popular D.somewhat similar to the European
style
67.Which of the following best describes the character of the
houses that Wright designed?
A.They were very large and beautiful.
B.They were very comfortable.
C.They could be used as churches.
D.They were beautiful in design but
not practical in use.
68.What is the most important idea in Wright’s style?
A.Architectural design should match
natural surroundings.
B.A building must have grassland
around it.
C.American style in architecture
should be different from European’s.
D.Design should be more important
than use.
69.Which of the following is NOT true about Wright’s
“grass-land houses”?
A.The lines of “grass-land houses” are
similar to lines on the grassland.
B.The lines of “ grass-land houses”
are horizontal.
C.The color of the lines of
“grass-land houses” is green.
D.They are different from European
style houses.
70.The best title for this passage would be _________.
A.The Differences between the
American and European Styles in Architecture
B.“Grass-land” Houses Designed by
Wright
C.How to Make Your Houses More
Beautiful
D.The Influence of Wright on
American Architecture

Is it possible to
persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient practice which has
existed for at least six thousand years. It was always bad and usually foolish,
but in the past, the human race managed to live with it. Modern cleverness has
changed this. Either Man will end the existence of war, or war will end the
existence of Man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons(核武器) that cause the most
serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer
an even greater threat. If we succeeded in ending the existence of nuclear
weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have
succeeded in ending war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon
international problems in a new way not as contests of force, in which the
victory goes to the side which is most skilful in killing people, but by
settling in accordance with agreed rules of law. It is not easy to change very
old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
There are those who say that the
acceptance of this or that ideology(意识形态) would prevent war. I believe this to be a big mistake.
All ideologies are based upon dogmatic statements(强词夺理) which are, at best,
doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their supporters believe in them so
deeply that they are willing to go to war in support of them.
The movement of world opinion
during the past few years has been very largely such as we can welcome. It has
become a commonplace that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult
problems remain in the world, but the spirit in which they are coming nearer to
is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by
the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations
should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly
satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important struggle
nowadays is not between different countries but between Man and the atom bomb.
71.This passage implies that war is now ________.
A.worse than in the past B.as bad as in the past
C.not so dangerous as in the past D.as necessary in the past
72.In the sentence “To do this, we need to persuade mankind…”
(Paragraph 1), “this” refers to ___________.
A.to end the existence of war B.to improve weapons
C.to solve international problems D.to live a peaceful life
73.From Paragraph 2 we learn that the writer of the passage
_________.
A.is a supporter of some modern
ideologies
B.does not think that the
acceptance of any ideologies could prevent war
C.believes that the acception of some
ideologies could prevent war
D.does not doubt the truth of any
ideologies
74.According to the writer, ___________.
A.war is the only way to solve
international arguments
B.war will be less dangerous
because of the improvement of weapons
C.it is impossible for people to
live without war
D.war must be ended if Man wants to
survive(生存)
75.The last paragraph suggests that ____________.
A.international agreements can be
reached more easily now
B.Man begins to realize the danger
of nuclear war
C.nuclear war will surely not take
place
D.world opinion welcomes nuclear
war

Every year more people recognize that it is wrong to kill wildlife for “sport.” Progress in this direction is slow because
shooting is not a sport for watching, and only those few who take part realize
the cruelty and destruction.
76 Children too young to develop proper
judgments through independent thought are led along way away by their gunning
parents. They are subjected to advertisements of gun producers who describe
shooting as good for their health and gun carrying as a way of putting redder
blood in the veins (血管). 77 . In school they view motion pictures
which are supposedly meant to teach them how to deal with arms safely but which
are actually designed to stimulate (刺激) a desire to own a gun.
Wildlife is
disappearing because of shooting and because of the loss of wildland habitat.
Habitat loss will continue with our increasing population, but can we slow the
loss of wildlife caused by shooting? 78
Wildlife belongs to everyone and not to the gunners alone. Although most
people do not shoot they seem to forgive shooting for sport because they know
little or nothing about it.
79
Now, it is time to realize that animals have the same right to life as
we do and that there is nothing fair or right about a person with a gun
shooting the harmless and beautiful creatures. The gunners like to describe
what they do as character-building, but we know that to wound an animal and
watch it go through the agony of dying can make nobody happy. 80
A. If, as they would have you believe,
gun-carrying and killing improve human-character, then perhaps we should encourage war.
B. The
only answer, then, is to bring the truth about sport shooting to the great
majority of people.
C. They are
forbidden to use guns because they are too young .
D. They
are persuaded by gunner magazines with stories honoring the chase and the kill.
E. The number of gunners, however, grows rapidly.
F. There doesnt seem to be any chance if
the serious condition of our birds is not improved.

I’m writing to tell
you that changes that have taken place in our English classes since teaching
techniques started to be used.
Teachers
used to speak alone all the time in class, keeping students busy making notes
and leaving them no time to think for themselves. As a result, what was taught
in class was difficult to understand or to remember. The classes were so dull
that the students gradually lost interest in learning the language.
However,
things are different now. With the help of computers and other equipment,
students not only listen, but also watch and speak a lot in class, which makes
what was dull or difficult easier to understand and remember. English classes
have become so interesting and lively that all the students are ready to grasp
this useful tool.
Yours truly,
Lihua
