Surgery that can improve the way a person looks is being more and more
popular in the United Stated. This
kind of surgery is called cosmetic surgery (整形手术), and
both men and women are turning to
this treatment as a way of keeping their appearance young as well as keeping competitive in their jobs. Men
especially are beginning to turn to face-lifts, liposuction (taking fat out of the body), and
implants (putting man-made parts into their bodies) to help them look younger. As companies downsize and move younger
employees into higher positions, older employees in their late forties and
early fifties feel the need to look and act younger in order to stay
competitive. A younger look through cosmetic surgery may give an older employee
a few more years on the job.
These operations are not without dangers, however. One
young woman had an eye operation to get rid of the bags under her eyes. She
described her experience as terrible. She said, When he started cutting,
I was fully awake. Even though hed given me an injection (注射) near my eyes, I saw everything. She went on to
explain, I knew I had to keep still because of what he was doing. He was scraping away fat under my
eyes. It took about ten minutes. After he finished I felt I couldnt
walk. I was so weak. Her troubles did not end after the
operation. For two weeks, her eyes were swollen and almost completely
closed, and even dark glasses could
not hide the side effects of the operation.
Liposuction is probably the most
popular cosmetic operation in the United States. It seems simple enough. First, a small cut is made
over the places where the patient wants the fat removed. Next, a small pipe is
put into the cut. A machine is then turned on, and the fat is taken right out
of the body. However, as one doctor explained, some problems can happen after
the operation. He warned, Irregular lumps (块) and loose
skin can result from this operation. If it is not completely done, liposuction
can produce a very lumpy result. Patients often must have more
liposuctions to correct the problem.
41. What is the
main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Some people want to have
cosmetic surgery in order to keep their jobs.

on their jobs for more years.

A year ago, I paid no attention to English
idioms, though my teacher emphasized(强调) the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of
English idioms was shown in an amusing experience.
One day, I happened to meet an Englishman
on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was
studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished. Gently shaking his
head, shrugging his shoulders, he said, “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was
puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not an appropriate topic. “Well. I’d better
change the topic.” So I said to him. “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall?
By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everyone back home will
laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was magnificent.” He was
deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall is
one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was
interrupted again by his words:” You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking, “Why
do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn’t request you to do so.” He
answered, greatly surprised. I said, “Didn’t you say ‘you don’t say’?” hearing
this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “ ‘You don’t say’
actually means ‘really!’ it is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay
attention to English idioms.”
Only then did I know I had made a fool of
myself. Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions.
Remember: what the English teachers said is always right to us students.

College libraries are
designed primarily for research and study. To explain its use, let us choose a research topic and follow the
step-by-step procedure of looking up the material for the paper. Suppose your
assignment is to write a paper on a novel called The Sun Also Rises by
American writer Hemingway. The first step is to go to the main catalog. Many
small drawers on the large wooden cabinets are lined up in alphabetical(字母的) order. Each of the drawers contains hundreds of
alphabetical ordered cards. These cards are printed references to all materials
available in the library. Title
cards are cataloged by the first word of the book title, leaving out the
articles like a, an and the. And then you
get the cards for the books you need. On the upper left corner of each
card is the call number. This
is the numerical code that shows where the book is located in the library. The library has open and closed
stacks. If your book is on the open
stacks, you can go to the
open-stack room, and according to
the call number find it out by yourself. There are only about 30,000 books
on open stacks, while most of the
800,000 books in our library are kept in closed stacks, which are accessible
only to teachers and graduate students.
For undergraduates like you,
borrowing books from the closed stacks have to be done with the help of
our librarian. In that case, you must fill out a call slip( 纸条) for the book, showing the call number, author and
title. You can get call slips on tables near the catalog cabinets. You show
your call slip together with your library card to a librarian at the
information desk. He or she will help you find the book out in the closed
stacks.
57. What is the
main purpose of this text?
A. To present
readers a brief introduction to a college library.
B. To guide
readers how to find books needed in a college library.
C. To tell
readers how to fill out a call slip in a college library.
D. To show
readers where to find books in a college library.
58. What letter
you should look for on the title card for the book The Old Man and the
Sea by Hemingway?
A. The letter
t. B. The letter h. C. The letter s. D. The letter
o.
59. How are books
arranged and shelved in the library?
A. By call numbers.
B. By call slips of authors names.
C. In alphabetical order.
D. By the first word of book title.
60. Suppose you
are an undergraduate and you want to borrow a book from the closed stacks, which
is the correct order to do it?
a) go to the main catalog
b) show your call slip and library
card
c) find out the call number
d) fill out a call slip
e) get the cards for the book
A. a-b-e-d-c B. a-e-c-d-b C.

第二节、阅读下列材料, 从所给的六个选项(A,B,C,D,E,F)中,选出符合各小题要求的最佳选项。选项中有一项是多余选项。
The following people are
expressing their thoughts (61---65) to show their concern for food, environment
and so on. After that are pieces of related information (A---F).Now decide
which piece of information would be most suitable for the thought and idea
mentioned in questions 61---65 and mark your answer letter (A---F) on your
answer sheet. There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to use.
61. How I was struck by the clear water and
fresh air in my childhood! But everything has changed, that is, the clear water
and fresh air are nowhere to be found again as they were. Above all, a great
deal of waste hardly rots away.
62. More and more people are beginning to
have a good knowledge of the importance of a safer and cleaner environment,
which in turn forces the business to be cleaned up.
63. Organic
products are getting more and more popular among people, but we should know the
fact that organic products might also have something to do with pesticides.
64. I’m very much
fond of growing some vegetables of my own in my small garden, for many
vegetables on sale in markets are actually becoming more and more dangerous as
a result of widespread pesticides.
65. Nowadays, it
is very convenient for consumers to find and buy green food in supermarkets as
they are clearly marked.
A. “Organic produce is always better,” Gold
said. “The food is free of pesticides(农药), and
you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more
often than not it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty.” Gold is
one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and
supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their
organic food business.
B. Market research shows that Gold and others
who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their
preferences---but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example,
small amount of pesticides can be used on organic products. And about three
quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported to meet growing
demand. “The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every
year, so it is a very fast---growing market,” said Sue Flock, a specialist in
this line of business.
C. Many cities around the world today are
heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand
for environment-friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem.
One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic, and metal
contains are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.
D. However, today, more and more consumers are
choosing “green” and demanding that the products they buy should be safe for
the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: ”Will
this shampoo damage the environment?” “Can this metal container be reused or
can it only be used once?”
E. Only a few years ago, it was impossible to
find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some
supermarket products carry labels(标签) to show
that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing(制造) of clean and safe products their main selling point
and emphasize it in their advertising.
F. The concern for a safer and cleaner
environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will
the public accept the old attitude of “Buy it, use it, throw it away, and
forget it.” The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up
its act.
