In 1962 there was only one TV channel in Sweden, and
it broadcast in black and white. The station’s technical expert, Kjell
Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a newly developed
technology, all viewers could now quickly and easily transform their existing
sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking
over their TV screen, and they would begin to see their favorite shows in
color. Reportedly, hundreds of thousands of people were taken in. Actual color
TV transmission only started to appear in Sweden on April 1, 1970.

Shanghai, as a global, open and innovative(创新的) city, has been chosen as the official venue(比赛点) of the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2007.
Bruce Pasternack, president and CEO of the Board of
Special Olympics Headquarters, said Shanghai was chosen as the venue because of
the city’s historical role and community efforts in keeping up with the
objectives of the Special Olympics movement.
“It is a
global, open, growing and innovative city, and its tradition of understanding
our movement makes it the ideal venue in getting our message out to the world,”Pasternack said in an exclusive interview with China
Daily.
The Special Olympics are year-round competitive events
and training programmes for people with intellectual disabilities of all ages,
abilities and levels. With international recognition as a professional global
sports event, it acts as a tool to promote equal rights and social status.
China began its participation in the Special Olympics
in the 1980s, reaching an explosion of interest when the number of
participating athletes increased tenfold from 50,000 to over 500,000 in the
last five years.
“This is
the highest growth we have ever seen in any significant programme,”said Timothy Shriver, chairman of the Board of Special
Olympics Headquarters.“That’s how we came to the decision two
years ago to move towards China to grow the programme. We want to develop it
into a large showcase for the world.”
China’s growing enthusiasm for the Special Olympics
moves beyond just mere figures. Deng Pufang, the eldest son of China’s former
leader Deng Xiaoping, is a leading advocate for the movement as part of the
International Board of Directors.
A family support programme in China boasts 6,000

Supermarkets are trying out new computers that make
shopping carts more intelligent. They will help shoppers find cups or toilet
soap, and keep a record of the bill.
The touch-screen devices are on show at the Food
Marketing Institute’s exhibition here this week. “These devices are able to
create value and get you around the store quicker,” said Michael Alexander,
manager of Springboard Retail Networks Inc. which makes a smart cart computer
called the Concierge.
Canadian stores will test the Concierge in July. A
similar device, IBM’s“shopping buddy,”has recently been test-marketed at Stop & Shop
stores in Massachusetts.
Neither device tells you how many fat grams or
calories are in your cart, but they will flash you with items on sale. The idea
is to make it easier for people to buy, not to have second thoughts that maybe
you should put something back on the shelf.
“The whole
model is driven by advertisers’ need to get in front of shoppers,”said Alexander.“They’re
not watching 30-second TV ads any more.”
People can use a home computer to make their shopping
lists. Once at the store, a shopper can use a preferred customer card to start
a system that will organize the trip around the store. If you’re looking for
toothpicks, you type in the word or pick it from a list, and a map will appear
on the screen showing where you are and where you can find them.
The devices also keep a record of what you buy. When
you’re finished, the device figures out your bill. Then you go to the checker
or place your card into a self-checkout stand and pay.
The new computerized shopping assistants don’t come
cheap. The Buddy devices will cost the average store about$160,000, and the
Concierge will cost stores about $500 for each device.
64. What does the
underlined word “ they” refer to?
A. Supermarkets B. Shop assistants C. Shopping carts D. Shop managers
65. Which of the following is
the correct order of shopping with the computerized shopping carts?
a. Start the system.
b. Make a shopping list.
c. Find the things you want.
d. Go to a self-checkout
A. a-b-d-c
B. b-a-c-d
C. a-c-b-d
D. b-c-a-d
66. What might be the most
suitable title for the text?
A. New age for supermarkets
B. Concierge and Shopping Buddy
C. Touch-screen devices make
shopping enjoyable
D. New computers make shopping
carts smarter

Peaceful Use of Space Resources Drives China’s Space
Program
(和平利用太空资源推动中国的太空工程)
China’s successful launch of its second manned
spacecraft Shenzhou-6 has drawn worldwide applause. It has become the third
nation in the world capable of putting men into space.
It is widely believed home and abroad that the latest
progress made by China will surely improve national unity and make the country’s
1.3 billion people more confident in their future in terms of social and economic
progress.
However, some people in and outside China describe
China’s manned space program as a fame project which brings in little economic
benefit.
They argue that billions of US dollars spent on the
decade-old space program may be better used for poverty relief and education as
millions of Chinese still have a poor living and many children cannot afford
basic schooling. However, mankind does need to make use of space resources
for sustainable human development.
Space technology has become increasingly important for
the exploration and peaceful use of space resources due to the shrinking
reserve of natural resources on the Earth.
Lunar reserve of isotope helium 3 is enough for human
need for about 10,000 years, which is attractive to the mankind being troubled
by high oil prices and limited oil reserve.
China has benefited from its investment in space sector.
Space technology has become an essential part of people’s daily life, such as
weather forecast, telecommunications, disaster reduction, and resources
searching.
Striving hard to feed its 1.3 billion people and more
in the future, China has been developing improved species of crops on the basis
of space technology, mostly through recoverable satellites and spacecraft.
Information obtained from Shenzhou-3 and Shenzhou-4 in
Earth observation has been used for maritime(海上的)
pollution control and desertification control projects, which is useful for
China and other parts of the world.
China has listed space technology and information
technology among the country’s seven high-tech fields in its national high-tech
research and development program initiated in 1986.
72. Which point of
view may the author NOT agree to?
A. The successful launch is significant
to the development of our country.
B. The successful launch proves
that our space technology is advanced in the world.
C. Though the launch is
successful, it benefits little in terms of economy.
D. It’s necessary to explore
resources in space.
73. Some people think China’s
manned space program brings in little economic benefit as they think about the
following EXCEPT .
A. there are many poor areas in
China lacking supports
B. many children can’t go to
school because of poverty
C. it will delay the progress of
economy
D. it costs too much on the space
program
74. Which supports the idea of
the underlined sentence in paragraph 4?
A. Resources are shrinking all
over the world
B. There are enough useful
resources in space for human use
C. The mankind is worrying about
less and less oil resource
D. All above
75. What can we learn from this
Passage?
A. Up till now, only three nations
can send satellites into space
B. The world are faced with the
crisis (危机) of oil nowadays
C. China failed to get useful
information in Earth observation until the successful launch of Shenzhou-6
D. Space technology has nothing to
do with agricultural development in China

It’s Time
to Reduce Loads
Nowadays, we often hear people complain
that it is expensive to buy houses, to pay for the children’s education and to
see the doctor, which is really true. As is shown in the picture, some people
are burdened with high expenses all their lives. Some people even get stuck in
heavy debt even though they make their efforts to earn money and save every
coin. Because of lack of money, some people have no room to live in. Some can’t
send their children to school. And some others even have to bear the pain of diseases.
In my opinion, the government should build
up a perfect system to meet the basic needs of living. The expenses on houses,
tuition and medicine should be cut down so that everyone can enjoy a better
life.
