It is true that paper can not last long. But is there any 36 that would last as long as stone and as

such a material. 38 an Englishman unearthed a large library

This is the way these books were 40

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

How old is “old”? The answer has changed over the years. Two hundred years
ago, you were 35. That was the average life span then. At the turn of this
century, as medical knowledge advanced, the average life span increased to 45.
In 1950, 70-year-olds were really old. Today, a healthy 70-year-old is looking
forward to many more active years.
So how old is old? The answer is one you’ve heard many times, from all
sorts of people. “You are as old (or young) as you feel.” The calendar simply
tells you how many years you have lived. Your body tells you how well you’ve
lived.
Old is a point of view. Alice Trophy said, “It makes me angry when people
say, ‘Gee, you look young for your age,’ What does that mean? Is there some
model that you’re supposed to look a certain way at 65 and 75 and 85? You know
you can die old at 30 and live young at 80.”
There are many myths (谜)about aging (becoming old ). Here are some of the
more common myths and the facts.
Myth 1: Most older people are in poor health.
Fact 1: Not so. There are neither biological nor physiological reasons to
connect poor health with growing older. Older people are more likely to be
affected with illness but old age itself is not a disease. It is possible to
remain physically healthy throughout your life.
Myth 2: Older people are unable to change.
Fact 2: Older people are as easily changed in their life-styles as young
and middle-aged people. Though sometimes they deal with the very big pressures —death of loved ones or jobs,
financial or jobs , financial or family problems—they deal wonderfully well. Older people give up smoking and break other
bad habits just as, successfully as younger people.
56. The article is
mainly about .
A. the average life span B.
aging
C. people’s health D.
life myths
57. We may know from the
article that .
A. aging does not mean you
become unhealthy
B. older people are not as smart
as young people
C. most older people are
physically healthy
D. your health can tell you how
many years you have lived
58. The reason why Alice
Troph got angry was that .
A. she didn’t think she looked
young for her age
B. she hates being thought old
C. she was 65 but people thought
she was 85
D. there wasn’t a model to
follow to judge one’s age
59. Which of the
following does the second fact support?
A. Older people have more
pressures than younger people.
B. Younger people break old
habits more easily.
C. Older people are not too
fixed to change for new needs.
D. Younger and middle-aged
people have the same problems as older people.

The small unframed painting called “Fisherman” was signed by a little-known
Italian artist, Maveleone (1669-1740).
When it was sold recently in New York for $27000, the seller, Mr Oliver
Pitt, was asked to explain how the picture had come into his possession.
Pitt said, “I didn’t know it was so valuable. I’m not an art expert. Photography is my hobby. I bought ‘Fisherman’
in Italy in 1970 for $ 140. The picture
was dirty, and I couldn’t see the artist’s signature. But anyway it wasn’t the
picture that I liked I bought it because of the frame. ”
“It’s a most unusual frame , made of tiny , silvery sea-shells(贝壳). They are set in such a way that they reflect perfect light onto the
surface of a picture. I now have a
photograph of my wife in that frame, and I’ll never part with it.”
“When I returned to New York I showed the painting in its frame to a
customs officer. I told him that I had paid $140 for it but admitted I didn’t
know its actual worth. The customs man valued it at $140, and I was asked to
pay duty on that value. I did so, there and then. ”
“Later, I took off the frame, and that uncovered Maveleone’s
signature. My wife suggested in fun
that the painting might be a valuable one, so I cleaned it and put it up for
sale.”
As a result of this explanation, Oliver Pitt had to appear in court. He was
accused of (指控)knowingly making a false statement of the value of a picture so as to
cheat the Customs Department.
Pitt was not happy. “I told the truth as I knew it then,” he said, “What
else could I say?”
And then the judge agreed with him.” The Customs Department is to be
responsible (blame),” he said, “for making a true valuation of goods bought
into the country, so that the correct amount of duty may be charged. Mr. Pitt
did not cause or try to cause the mistake that was made. He paid the duty that
was demanded. If, now, the Customs Department finds that its valuation was not
correct, it cannot be allowed to have another try. Pitt is not guilty (有罪).

When buying a new house , you must be sure to have it checked for termites
(白蚁). A termite is much like an
ant in its communal (群居的)habits , although physically the two insects are
different .
Like those of ants, termite colonies consist of different classes, with its
own particular job. The most perfectly formed termites, both male and female,
make up the reproductive class. They have eyes, hard body walls and fully
developed wings. A pair of reproductive termites founds the colony. When new
reproductive termites develop, they leave to form another colony. They use
their wings only this one time and then break them off.
The worker termites are small, blind, and wingless, with soft bodies. They
make up the majority of the colony and do all the work. Soldiers are also
wingless and blind but are larger than the workers and have hard heads and
strong jaws and legs. They defend the colony and are cared for by the workers.
The male and female of the reproductive class remain inside a closed-in
cell where the female lays thousands of eggs. The workers place the eggs in
cells and care for them.

like ants?

soldier.

When a consumer (消费者)finds that something he or she bought is faulty or in
some other way does not live up to what the producer says for it , the first
step is to present the warranty (保单), any other records that
might help , at the store of buying .
In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are
various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.
A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly
to the store manager. In general, the “higher up” the consumer takes his or her
complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it
is usually settled in the consumer’s favour, taking it as true that he or she
has a just right.
Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot
get to the place of buying, it is acceptable to phone or write the complain in
a letter. Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but
firmly, and especially when the consumer can show clearly what is wrong with
what was bought in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed
best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by
making general statements. For example , “The left speaker does not work at all
and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear” is better than “This
stereo (立体音响) does not work”.
The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the producer, if so,
the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as
possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the expected result, the
consumer can go a step further. He or she can threaten (恐吓) to take the seller to court or report the seller to a public organization
responsible for protecting consumer’s right.
68. If a consumer wants
a quick settlement of his problem, it’s better to complain to .

C. a public organization D.
a store manager
69. The most effective
complaint about what was bought can be made by .

wrong with it
70. The passage tells us
.

have a good effect
B. how to settle a consumer’s
complaint

wrong

from consumers
71. According to the
passage, the last way a consumer has to use is .
