large audiences. One was
a comedy and the other was a play

wet towels and handkerchiefs round their heads.

to see the studio control room full of police. They were warned
about the panic which was 16 traffic and filled the hospitals
with screaming women. They ordered that announcements 17
be made pointing out that it was only a radio play, not an 18
news broadcast. The message was given four times 19
the programme ended, but it was not enough to 20
nationwide fear. Further announcements were made as late as
midnight.
