One of the qualities that most people admire in others in the willingness to admit one’s mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,” and it is even harder to say , “I was wrong, and you were right about that.”
I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain store in the neighborhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons(in many countries, eggs are sold by the dozen and are put in cartons.)Then he related an incident(event, matter)and I began to remember unclearly the incident he was describing.
I was about eight years old at the time. I went into the store with my mother to do some shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the food department where the incident took place.
There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there were lots of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were put three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of the piles of egg cartons. Just then a woman came by pushing her shopping cart and knocked off the cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the eggs back together, so I went to work.
The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees looking at some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the one who just did it. He severely reprimanded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, it is plain that the manager did not.
60. According to this passage, many people will have a good opinion of those who________.

D. forget other people’s mistakes easily

“It’s over! Thank goodness!”
School was over and I was tired. I sat at the front of the school bus.
Janie, the driver, tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere(气氛) by striking the match of talks. I try to listen politely, but usually I’m too busy thinking about my day. On this day, however, her talk was worth listening to.
“My father’s ill,” she said to no one in particular(特别地). I could see worry in her eyes. I had never seen her like this before. She always meets students with a smile.
With a sudden chance of interest, I asked, “What’s wrong with him?”
With her eyes wet and her voice unusual, she answered, “Heart trouble”. Her eyes lowered as she continued. “I’ve already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him.” I couldn’t answer. My heart ached for her.
I sat on the seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died. I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.
Suddenly I realized(意识到)Janie wasn’t only a bus driver, that was just her job. She had a whole world of family and cares too.
I shouldn’t have been so selfish(自私的). I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. I had judged(判断) her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant.

Rome—Doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted with strong opposition to the news that an Italian specialist is on the brink of cloning the first human baby.
Dr.Severino Antinori, who is the head of a hospital in Rome, has been referred to in an Arab newspaper as claiming that one of his patients is eight weeks pregnant(怀孕)with a cloned baby.
Antinori refused to comment on the reports, but in March 2001 he said he hoped to produce a cloned embryo(卵)for implantation within two years. So far seven different kinds of mammals have already successfully cloned, including sheep, cats and most recently rabbits.
Doctors showed their doubt and were strongly opposed although they admit that human cloning would finally come true unless there was a world wide ban on the practice.
Professor Rudolf Jaenisch of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: “I find it astonishing that people do this where the result can be foretold that it will not be a normal baby. It is using humans as guinea pigs. It makes people feel sick.”
But Ronald Green, director of the Ethics Institute at Darmouth College in the US, said it is unlikely that an eight-week-old pregnancy would lead to a birth.
So far all cloned animals have suffered from some different serious disorders, many of them dying soon after their births.
Doctors are opposed to human cloning because they are worried about the welfare of the cloned child if there is one.
“There are no benefits of cloned human beings, just harm,” said Dr .Michael Wilks of the UK.

What is intelligence, anyway? When I was in the army I received an I.Q. (intelligence) test that all soldiers took, and I scored 160 against an average of 100.
All my life I’ve been making scores like that, so that I have the feeling that I’m highly intelligent, and I expect other people to think so, too. Yet, such scores mean actually that I am very good at answering the type of academic questions devised by the people who make up the I.Q. tests—a professor like myself.
Once I had an auto-repair man. I always took it for granted that I was far more intelligent than he was. I thought he could not have scored more than 80 on such I. Q. tests. Yet, when anything went wrong with my car I hastened to him, and he always fixed my car. Well, then, suppose my auto-repair man devised questions for an I. Q. test. Or suppose a carpenter did, or a farmer, or almost anyone but an academician. By every one of those tests, I’d prove myself an idiot. In a world where I could not use my academic training and my verbal talents but had to do something working with my hands, I would do poorly.
My auto-repair man had a habit of telling me jokes. One time he asked me, “Doc, a deaf-and-dumb guy went into a hardware store to ask for some nails. He put two fingers together on the counter and made hammering motions with the other hand. The clerk brought him a hammer. He shook his head and pointed to the two fingers he was hammering. The clerk brought him nails. He picked out the sizes he wanted, and left. Well, doc, the next guy who came in was a blind man. He wanted scissors. How do you suppose he asked for them?”
Naturally, I lifted my right hand and made scissoring motions with my first two fingers.
Whereupon my auto-repair man laughed loudly and said, “Why, you dumb fool, he used his voice and asked for them.” Then he said, “I’ve been trying that on all my customers today.” “Did you catch many?” I asked. “Quite a few,” he said, “but I knew for sure I’d catch you.” “Why is that?” I asked.
“Because you’re so goddamned educated, doc, I knew you couldn’t be very smart.”And I have an uneasy feeling he had something there.
73. The speaker scored 160 on an I. Q. test simply because he was________.
A. considered highly intelligent          B. much smarter than others
C. trained for answering such questions    D. educated to be a medical doctor
74. After joking with the speaker, the auto-repair man remarked that________.
A. he was unwilling to tease his customers
B. education always makes one smarter
C. he was very ashamed of playing a practical joke
D. a highly educated person might lose common sense
75. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. One can be fooled once but not all the time.
B. Success is 1% intelligence and 99% diligence.
C. Intelligence cannot always be measured by an I. Q. test.
D. An I. Q. test should include questions on auto repair.

I was in the kitchen for only a few minutes around 10:00 am. But I think someone was there between then and 11:00. The kitchen has one window. Along the north wall is a sink with a stove on the left hand and a refrigerator on the right. At about 10:00, the refrigerator was closed but now it is open. Also, now there are only two pans hanging on the wall, but at 10:00 there were three hanging there. Another change is that now the stove is on, but before it was off. Finally the curtains are closed, but at 10:00 they were open.

M: That’s right. I was. But things turned out differently.
W: But you seemed so determined to do that. What happened?
M: Well, it’s very complicated, and I’m sure you don’t want to know all the details. Anyway I decided that opening my own business just wasn’t for me. So I decided to stay at my old job instead.
W: So you are still working in that shop.
M; Yes. Well, a lot sure has happened since we last saw each other.
W: I’ll say! You know, we should try to stay in touch.
M: Let’s have lunch together sometime soon.
W: Good idea.
M: I’d like to put an ad in the newspaper, please.
W: A classified ad?
M: Yes. I want to sell my furniture. I’m moving.
W: I see. May I have your name, please?
M: Bill Martin.
W: M-A-R-T-I-N. And your address?
M: The Garden Apartment on Books Road.
W: Well, the price depends on the size, not on the words. So, if you want to use shorter words, that might save you some money.
M: Oh, that’s a good idea. I have everything written out here, but I’ll just check it over before I give it to you. Maybe I should use phrases instead of sentences.
W: Would you like to pay cash or by credit card?
M: I’ll probably be gone before a bill could be sent. I’m going to pay cash.
W: Okay. You can use that table. Just bring it back to me when you are ready.
W: Dong, I didn’t see you around last week! Everything OK?
M: Thanks Sarah. I was down with the flu.
W: Oh, sorry to hear it. How are you doing now?
M: Much better, thanks. Still a little weak and have a sore throat. But I’m finally up and about.
W: Glad to hear it. Well, you didn’t miss much. Things have been pretty slow. We are reviewing Unit 10. You can copy my notes, if you want to. If you need any help catching up, just let me know.
M: Thanks, I appreciate it. Take care of yourself. I’ve heard quite a few people have had the flu.
W: I wil1. In fact, my mother was down with it a couple of weeks ago. I’ve already seem exposed, but so far I seem to be OK. I’ll keep on taking Vitamin C and getting plenty of sleep. Nice to see you back to school.
W: John, how many years have you been studying at this college?
M: I started …er…well, one year ago. Tell me again. What is it that you’re studying? Computing, isn’t it? Basic Programming?
W: Yes. I worked as a computer programmer after I graduated from high school.
M: So why are you doing Basic Programming now?
W: No, no. Advance! Programming.
M: Right. Well, here we are at the Student Center.
W: Oh, it’s huge!
M: Yeah, well, it has to be. There are 500 students on Campus and 50 staff.
W: Oh, look, there’s some information about clubs.
M: I’m already a member of the Table Tennis Club and the Cinema Club. Do you want to play table tennis? W: I’m not much good, I’m afraid. What about the Film Club? How much is it to join?
M: For second year students it’s cheaper. Only 10 pounds, but for first year students, it’s 20 pounds, I think. Do you want to become a member?
W: Why not?
M: Ok. Let’s go to the student information office, over here…
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to “Get away from it all Holiday Tour.” I’d like to tell you now a few things about the holiday we have arranged for you.
  (1) First, for those who want to ski, you can rent skis on the spots and boots too. Surely it’s better if you have your own boots.
(2) Don’t forget that it can gel quite cold in the day, so warm clothes are quite important.
(3) This isn’t the season for sunbathing, but the ski-slopes are often very sunny, so be careful not to get burnt.
(4) We hope that you will also enjoy our indoor snorts, there is, for example, an excellent heated swimming pool.
(5)The hotel booked for you is very comfortable, but the nights do get very cold sometimes, so be prepared for that.
(6) For those looking for other activities, there are lovely walks, good views and interesting birds up the hill. And higher up there are good opportunities for climbers to enjoy the mountains. But be prepared for wet weather occasionally in the valleys.
(7) Finally, I’d like to mention that we offer excellent opportunities to try delicious and unusual local food, many restaurants, night-clubs and discos.
