Most gift-giving shows nothing more than the spirit of
love and friendship. But it is possible to form some associations between the
kinds of things bought and the people who buy them.
EXPENSIVE GIFTS Naturally, some gifts will be more
expensive than others. But some people give higher priced gifts than necessary
for the situation. Someone who gives an expensive gift often feels that he
should receive more praise than if he had given a less expensive one. Therefore
he is giving himself a gift, too: status (地位).
HOMEMADE GIFTS. Making something by hand has become the
exception in many countries today. If you receive a homemade gift, you are
lucky, It may not be made perfectly, but it will show a certain quality of
love.
BOOKS. People
who give books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think
they do. A good way to know this is to find out whether or not the giver bought
the book according to how large it is. If you receive a large heavy book, its
giver may be much more interested in the way things appear than in the way they
actually are. Anyhow, giving a BOOK book can be a way of sharing a feeling or a
newly learned meaning. The giver is probably trying to say to you what the book
said to him.

Let us say there is something you don’t know how to do.
In the past if you were determined to learn, you might have called a
friend or relative, taken a night class or walked down to the local library for
a research term.
But now a host of websites are springing up to provide free
practical advice on these subjects and actually anything else you can think of.
In one sense, these “how-to” sites represent a part of the growing
world of online learning.
This tradition found one of its earliest forms in the FAQs-or
Frequently Asked Questions files (案卷)—that began on
Usenet, the Internet’s global discussion group.
These FAQs, many of which still circulate (go round continuously),
took a specific subject and explained it to complete novices.
But “how-to” sites take the FAQ idea in a somewhat different direction
by addressing subjects that are not necessarily associated with discussion
forums (论坛).
These sites take the style of a written tutorial and a tone of
friendly advice.
Possibly the biggest and best known of these sites if learn2.com (www.learn2.com)
. It offers nearly 1000 free tutorials and adds new ones frequently for a job
interview.
At ehow.com (www.ehow.com) you
can learn how to train for your first marathon, how to buy a vacation home, or
how to make a movie in eight steps.
64.The passage
wants to ________.
A.introduce new websites to netizens

Internet

new
D.help you to solve any difficulty
you meet with

forums

online learning

C.beginners of “how-to” sites

A.deaf person can teach himself at
home by visiting “how-to” sites

home to question anything

The human brain contains, I am told, 10 thousand million cells and
each of these may have a thousand connections. Such enormous numbers used to
discourage us and canes us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with
human-like ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a
pace we can be less sure.
Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps, we will be able to fit
together(assemble) a machine as complex as the human
brain, and if we can will. It may then take us a long time to cause it
intelligent by loading in the right software or by changing the architecture but
that too will happen.
I think it certain that in decades not centuries, machines of
silicon(硅)will arise
first to rival and then surpass(超越)their human progenitors(创建者). Once they surpass us they will he capable of their own design. In
a real sense they will be reproductive. Silicon will have ended carbons(碳)long monopoly. And ours
too, I suppose, for we will no longer be able to consider ourselves the finest
intelligence in the known universe.
68. According to the writer, which of the
following is true?
A. Though the human brain contains 10 thousand million cells, it is
still not enough.
B. It will take a few centuries to make a human-like machines will
be as good as human.
C. In only 1 or 2 decades
perhaps, human-like machines will be as good as human.
D. Silicon machines will completely take the place of human.
69. What is implied but not stated in the
passage?
A. Wed better not make human-like machine stronger than human.
B. Machines of silicon will have more brain cells than humans.
C. Human-like machines will control human completely.
D. Machines of silicon will be able to make some other kinds of
machine.
