Do you know Harry Porter? He is a popular boy

Porter? His name is Daniel Jacob Radcliffe, who was born on July 23, 1989 in
the London suburb of Fulham. From the age of five, Dan had expressed an
interest in acting. When he was a little older, suggested by a friend, he made
his small screen appearance as Charles Dickens’ famous character—David
Copperfield. Following that, Dan, to gain some experience, took a small part in
the film The Tailor of Panama.
After working with Dan, Kate Copperfield,

It was Dan’s charm and simplicity that caught
the eyes of director Columbus on the search for Harry Potter. He called Dan to

with so many children to audition for the role, Dan’s parents were reluctant
to let him have it at first. They worried that his hopes would be ruined if he
couldn’t get that role successfully. Then one night, Dan said, “My dad came in
and told me I’d got the part of Harry Potter. I cried, and I was so happy. I
really was going to be Harry Potter.”
When J. K. Rowling, the writer of Harry Potter saw Dan’s screen test, she
said, “His performance is amazing. It seems that I have found my long-lost
son.”
Harry Potter and the
Philosopher’s Stone was

In Miami, thousands of students have been out
of class for some days because of Hurricane Wilma. Educational officials are
worried about the long break will affect students’ school performance.
“We think that the
sooner we get back to business, the better,” said Rudy Crew, headmaster of
Miami-Dade School. 360, 000 students in this area will return to class on Thursday,
10 days after Wilma hit South Florida.
More than half the
district’s 327 school buildings were seriously damaged when Wilma struck on
October 24, and 270 buildings lost electrical power. About 30 buildings are
still out of power, but lights may
be back on Thursday when students return. In Broward County, schools will remain
closed through Friday, because more than 100 buildings have been damaged after
the storm. With traffic affected by broken stoplights, officials are worried about
the safety of children traveling to and from school.
In Miami-Dade County, the nation’s fourth
largest school district, officials are considering ways to make up for lost
time. They may make the school year longer and reduce days from two-week
holiday break in late December, said spokesman John Schuster.
Some parents also worry about the effect of
lost school days. “They’re missing important tests and lessons that they are
going to need. And how do you catch up with that lost time? It just
disappears,” a high school student’s mother said.
“Although things are difficult, students’
performance in hurricane-damaged district may not be seriously affected by the
hurricane”, said Florida Education Commissioner John Winn. “It turned out that
hurricane-affected districts showed more learning gains than other districts in
previous years. They have learned how to fight against disaster in any time.
Things will turn better anyway.”

will students return to school in the district?
A. October 24. B. October 31.
C. November 3. D.
November 7.
60. Which of the following
statements is NOT true according to the passage?

electrical power have all returned to normal

As the world’s population grows,
more and more people are living in dangerous volcanic areas. Today, there are
many active volcanoes worldwide. Volcanic eruptions are still a big danger and
greatly affect people’s daily life. Mt. Rainier in the Seattle-Tacoma area of
the USA, for example, leaves a population of more than three million people in
danger. A great number of people living in the Naples area of Italy are still
threatened by Mt. Vesuvius after that famous eruption in history. Before
talking about volcanic eruptions, we need to know why they occur or how
volcanoes form.
Deep inside the earth,
there is the cover of rock. It is largely solid and very hard. But the rock sometimes
melts for different reasons. When it melts, it may move to the earth’s surface
through weak places of the earth. At the same time, it gives out heat, gas and
therefore a volcano begins to erupt. But why does this solid rock melt and come
to the surface?
High temperature and
pressure can cause the rock to melt and become liquid rock, or magma(岩浆) that can flow like water. When the body of
magma rises toward the earth’s surface, some of it remains liquid. Magma that
has reached the surface is called lava(熔岩).
Magma is made up of different components(成分),
because rocks are made up of many minerals that melt at different temperature.
The different components will produce different kind of lava. And every kind of
lava has its own specific name.
63. The passage is mainly about
______.
A. what disasters the
volcano may cause
B. there are many
volcanoes in the world
C. magma comes from
different components
D. how does the
volcanic eruption form
64. The
correct order of the following statements is ______.
a. The rock inside the earth
melts b. Magma comes out of
the surface of the earth.

and pressure.
d. Lava is formed.
A. a, b, d, c B.
c, a, b, d C.
c, a, d, b D.
b, a, c, d
65. Which
of the following can be inferred according to the passage?
A. People weren’t threatened by
volcanoes at all in the past.
B. Melted rock comes to the earth’s
surface through weak places in the crust.
C. Mt Vesuvius used to bring
people who lived around a terrible disaster.
D. There are still many active
volcanoes around the world nowadays.
