A great king of a land far away in the East had a daughter. She
was very beautiful, but so conceited that she thought nobody was as
beautiful and rich as her. Every day, she only idled away by playing with her
servants in the garden. Moreover, she thought that none of the princes who wanted
to marry her was good enough. All she ever did was make fun of them. The old
king was very angry, so he decided whether she was willing or unwilling, she
would marry the first man that came to their kingdom.

But this wasn’t the end of the story. Being the wife of a poor

also became gentle and warm-hearted, always ready to help others. But one day,
beyond her expectation, her husband told her he was actually a prince of a

Because of the development of
agriculture, the area of land affected by sand has gradually increased. During
the 1950s and 1960s the land affected by sand expanded on average into 1,600
square kilometers per year. By the 1990s, the area had reached 2,500 square
kilometers per year. This kind of situation is particularly serious in
many regions upwind(逆风的) from Beijing. Fengning City in Hebei Province and Duolun City in
Inner Mongolia lie to the north of Beijing, and in the last 50 years the
population of these two cities has grown by 2 to 3 times. In order to obtain more
resources, the inhabitants have been busy with heavy farming, tree-cutting and keeping
animals. The result is that the soil which has sustained damage, and the sand
layer below the earth is now exposed on the ground and the ground is rapidly
being controlled by the spread of sand.
China has already noticed this problem, and has take measures
to save the land. Nowadays, some land used for farming has returned to
forestland and grassland. The Chinese government announced that it would invest
more than RMB 600,000,000 to control Beijing’s sandstorms in the coming years.
Only by decreasing the damage caused by man and restoring the natural
environment will it be possible to well control the sources of the sand and
dust. We hope in the not-distant future, we will solve the problem successfully
and effectively.
59. Compared with 50s and 60s, the land
affected by sand increased by _____ square kilometers by the 1990s.

land?

B. People keep animals which need more grain.
C. People prepare too much land to grow crops.
D. People cut a lot of forests and raise animals.
61. The major measure that Chinese
government has taken is _____.

B. making better use of natural resources
C. killing fewer animals and cutting
fewer trees
D. returning some land to forestland and
grassland
62. According to the passage, it can be
inferred that _____ was the major factor of the environmental damage.
A. man B.
animal C.
nature D. desert

Paying
attention to someone in a conversation is called “attending” . It means that
your ears, your eyes, your body and your feelings are all focused on that
person at the time. Attending includes:
Physical
Presence.
Friendships are a building process. You and your friend gradually share
interests, feelings and goals. Much of this is done by being together
physically. Your physical presence shows that you care about your friend. It means
that he or she is important to you.
Focusing. Focusing means all of your attention, physically
and mentally, is directed toward your friend during the whole conversation. You
are facing toward your friend and your expression on the face shows you are
interested. Keep the focus on your friend. Even though you may feel you have
the similar personal experiences and want to tell him or her your feelings, don’t
interrupt the conversation immediately, because it may take focus away from
your friend and places it on you.
Looking. Remember to look with your eyes. Here is
a classic example. A child is drawing while his mother cleans the kitchen. The
child finishes a picture and says, “Look at this one, Mommy.”
The mother mumbles, “That’s great,” while
continuing to cook the meal.
Finally the child says, “Look now, Mommy.
Look with your eyes.”
Looking
at another person shows that you are there for him or her during the conversation.
It requires a lot of eye contact.
Allow Time for Friendships to Grow! Jan Yager, author of Friendshifts, says,“ Tried-and-true friendship takes three years to develop,
because working through conflicts(冲突) will determine if a friendship has
staying power and if it’s worth building between each other.”
63. The following is how to “attending” to a friend EXCEPT
that ______.
A.
you should often be physically together with your friend
B. you should focus on your friend during the whole conversation
C. you should frequently look at your
friend’s eyes when he / she speaks
D. you should express your idea at once
when you have a similar experience
64. It takes at least three years to develop friendship, because
_____.
A. people always want to find a real friend
who has power
B. making a good friend needs a lot of
money and energy
C. it is very difficult to find a true
friend who has the same interests
D. disagreements between the two can prove
if the friendship can last
65.The best title of this passage is ____.

This is Ned Weather, your weatherman. This afternoon
heavy rain fell in our town. The big storm caused a lot of damage, and the
traffic came to a complete stop.
Now let’s look at the weather report for tomorrow and
the weekend. Friday will be warm and sunny during the day and cool at night.
Temperatures will be in the sixties during the day and in the forties at night.
You won’t need a heavy coat, but take a jacket to work just in case.
The weather on Saturday will be nice
in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon. It’ll probably rain at night.
Showers are quite common during the spring, but you’ll have clear weather to do
some gardening on Saturday morning. Sunday will be cold and windy, and maybe it’ll
snow in the mountains. If you’re planning to go there, don’t forget your boots
and jackets. And now for sports, here is Mathew Delaney…
