II.
The Internet can be a very fun and useful tool. It has become so
extensive 21 (引导词) you can now do everything 22 (介词) shop for clothes to research the
pyramids of Egypt. 23 You can do so many things, just by being online.
One of the most unique experiences 24 (come的适当形式) out of the Internet’s
popularity is the phenomenon of Internet friends.
25 An Internet friend is someone whom you talk to on line and
probably have never met the person. (改正句中一处错误) You may have first talked to this person in a chat room and
discovered you 26 (短语动词) a lot and then you made friends. You probably exchange messages
with this person whenever you are online. Internet friends often live in
another city, or even another country! Having Internet friends is 27 (冠词或零冠词,零冠词用/ 表示) unique experience and gives us a
chance to learn about other people.
Even though Internet friends can be a lot of fun, it is important to
remember that we need to be cautious. 28 (连词) we have probably never met the person we are talking to, we have
no way of knowing if they are telling the truth. It is important not to give
too much 29 (person的派生词) information because it may be
dangerous. 30 You should always
think twice before giving an Internet friend your telephone number or home
Many people use e-mail to communicate with each other. If you have
access to a computer, it is a great way to send messages easily, quickly and as
often as you like. No longer is it necessary to find a pen and paper, not to 31
an envelope or a stamp.
Are we missing anything by not writing 32 letters to people?
Is the experience of receiving such letters worth the trouble of writing them?
Most people would probably reply,” No, it is a waste of paper 33 ; this
is a much better system.” It is hard to argue 34 such a viewpoint.
However, I would like to try.
I believe that this kind of letters people 35 to write tended
to be more meaningful than billions of email sent today. Of course, when it 36
to sending quick messages, email is the best. If 37 is important, email
is particularly useful. If, however, you want really to reach out and touch
someone, a letter is more personal.
Handwritten letters are the most personal. If you can type fast, you
can fit a lot into a letter. What’s 38 is that special sense of the
person that comes from seeing her or his handwriting. 39 it’s legible (可辨认的), it doesn’t matter how tidy it
is. When someone sits down and writes just for you, you feel that when you are
reading it.
Though I’m a teenager, I admit that I, too, feel excited to read a
letter in the mail. I love seeing my name written by hand on a(n) 40 .
You make yourself a nice cup of tea, sit down in a comfortable place, open your
letter, and enjoy everything that the person put into those words just for you.
What a gift!

Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200years ago. He
studied the observations of comets which other scientists had made. The orbit
of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not
figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems.
However, Halley
had a friend named Isaac Newton. Who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already he had done it. He told Halley that
the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse.
Now Halley set
to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed
by scientist. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in
the years 1531, 1607 and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had
been 75 to 76 years apart.
This seemed
very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The
more Halley thought about it, the more he thought that there had not been three
different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the
same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again.
It was an
astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what would
happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758.
There were 53 years to go before Halley’s prediction could be tested.
In 1758 the
comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he had died some years
before. Ever since then that comet been called Halley’s comet, in his honor.

Millions of
years ago dinosaurs lived on the earth. In the days of dinosaurs, the whole
earth was warm and wet. There were green forests and they could find enough to
eat. Later, parts of the earth became cold and dry, and the forests there died.
Then dinosaurs could not find enough to eat. This must be one reason why
dinosaurs died out.
We can guess
another reason. New kinds of animals came on the earth. Some had big brains and
strong .They could kill dinosaurs.
There may be
other reasons that we don’t know about yet. Scientists are trying to make more
discoveries about dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs were of many sizes and shapes.
Some were as small as chickens, while some were about 90 feet long.
There were also
terrible rights between dinosaurs. They might have happened more than 100
million years ago. Though there was no man to see any of the fights, we can be
told by the animal’s footprints(足迹)that fights did take place .
64. According to the passage, dinosaurs did
exist only on the earth _______.

The blue tits(山雀) have been inspecting the nest-box again
this year. The male is the house-hunter but the female will make the final
choice. He lands at the hole and turns his head to expose his white cheeks as a
signal to attract the female from where she has been feeding.
Among many birds that nest in holes, the
male has a light-coloured patch on its plumage(鸟羽)
which acts as signal for drawing the female’s attention to a suitable
nesting-place. Unlike the blue tit, the redstart(红尾鸲)
may be only the male that strikingly coloured and the female is not beautiful.
A few years ago I was lucky enough to
spot a pair of redstarts in action in a Walsh wood. The male was leading an
interested female to holes that he had previously(先前) checked out. He sat at the entrance of
each hole and put his head on to show off his white forehead, or his head in to
reveal(显露) his tail.
If the female failed to
react to his visual signals, the male sometimes sang for extra effect, while
gliding towards her on spread wings and tail. Once the female accepts by
following the male through the hole the displays stop, you must be at the right
place at the right time to watch them.
68 How do the blue tits choose
their nest?
A. They choose their nest together.
B. The male chooses their nest.
C. The house-hunter chooses their nest.
D. The female chooses their nest.
69. The writer was lucky to
see ________.
A. how the male made his tricks
B. how an interested female played with
the male happily
C. what the male displayed and won the
female
D. that the male tried his best but
failed to attract the female
70. You can spot a pair of
redstarts in a Walsh wood ________.
A. at any time B. regularly C. in April D. occasionally
71. The writer is probably
________.
A. a bird expert B.
a bird-hunter
C. a bird raiser D.
a scientist

With only
about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the
endangered species(物种). That’s a more similar to what a Texas A & M University
researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called
“Noah’s Ark”.
Noah’s Ark is
aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid
nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a
professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would
be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the
future.
It is
estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become
extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of
becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week,
Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead
female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying
to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire
procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear
transfer(核子移植) of one
species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being
used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will
probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having
a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be
groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live
pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the
leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a
dog.
“They are
trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our
work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I
certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they
are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”
72. The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to _______.
A. make
efforts to clone the endangered pandas
B. save
endangered animals from dying out
C. collect
DNA of endangered animals to study
D. transfer
the nuclear of one animal to another
73. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning
pandas would be the lack of _______.
A. available
panda eggs B.
host animals
C. qualified
researchers D.
enough money
74. The best title for the passage may be _______.
A. China’s
Success in Pandas Cloning
B. The First Cloned Panda in
the World
C. Exploring the Possibility to
Clone Pandas
D. China —the Native Place of
Pandas Forever
75. From the passage we know that _______.
A. Kraemer
and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog
B. scientists try to implant a
panda’s egg into a rabbit
C. Kraemer will work with
Chinese scientists in clone researches
D.

Today in
American ,if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choices

a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. 64_____.

in a hero than such things as money

49. B (文章第一句话“Millions of years ago dinosaurs lived on the earth.”
50. D(文章第一段介绍恐龙灭绝的一个原因是缺乏食物,而B项是导致食物缺乏的一个原因。)
51. B(第二段介绍恐龙灭绝的另一个原因是出现了更大、更强、更聪明的生物,它们有可能把恐龙杀灭。)
52. C(从文章第三段第二句话“Scientists are trying to make more discoveries about dinosaurs.”
The male is the house-hunter but the
female will make the final choice
I was lucky enough to spot a pair of
redstarts in action in a Walsh wood
A few years ago I was lucky enough to…和…you must be at the right place at the
right time to see them 可知答案为D。
56. A 推断题。
58. A 细节题。从第6段第1句话 The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available
(capable of being used ) panda eggs could be a major problem
BFDAE

Dear Mr. Editor,
All the students
of our school are strongly against the construction of a chemical works near
our school. Although it makes a lot of money for our city, we do think it will
do us more harm than good. The drinking water will be badly polluted. And the
air over the city will be polluted, too. We will never be able to breathe fresh
air. How can we live and study here any longer? By the way, it also does harm
to the people living in the neighborhood. Last but not least, the site of the
chemical works has been the only place where we students play games and have
sports after school. If such a factory were built there, where should we go?
