Over the past 10 years, technologies that have combined computers
with telephone have developed.Technologies such as PC fax
programs and LAN fax servers(局域网传真服务器)have been used to improve fax
communications.The latest computer-based
technologies are new mechanisms(机制)which use IP(Internet Protocol因特网协议)to send faxes , that is , IP fax.
Traditional fax has a fairly simple
usage model.First, the user inserts a document into the fax
machine,enters the destination fax
number and presses the start button on the machine .The sending machine dials the receiving
fax machine. If it connects, the sending machine scans the documents
and sends it over the public switched telephone network(PSTN公共电话交换网)to
the receiving machine. At the same time, the receiving machine receives the
document and then prints it.
In IP fax system there are two basic
transmission modes:store-and-forward mode and
real-time mode.Store-and-forward mode has
been widely used.In this mode, the entire document is sent to a
network-based server that stores it and then sends it to the destination.Real-time IP faxing is similar to
traditional fax.Real-time mode allows two fax
machines to directly communicate through some standard.
IP fax enables a fax document to be sent
from one person to another. A fax machine or a computer can be used to send or
receive the fax.IP fax also allows e-mail to
be used to receive faxes. This would enable users to
receive faxes anywhere, anytime with an internet fax
address.

Rome — Doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted
with strong opposition to the news that an Italian specialist is on the
brink of cloning (克隆) the first human baby.
Dr. Severino Antinori, who is the head of a hospital in Rome, has been referred to in an Arab newspaper
as claiming that one of his patients is eight weeks pregnant(怀孕)with a cloned baby.
Antinori refused to comment on the
reports, but in March 2001 he said he
hoped to produce a cloned embryo(胚胎)for implantation (植入) within two years. So far seven different kinds of mammals(哺乳动物)have already successfully cloned, including sheep, cats and most recently rabbits.
Doctors showed their doubt and were
strongly opposed although they admit that human cloning would finally come true
unless there was a worldwide ban on the practice.
Professor Rudolf Jaenisch of the
Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology said,“I find it astonishing that
people do this where the result can be foretold that it will not be a normal
baby.It is using humans as guinea
pigs.It makes people feel sick.”
But Ronald Green, director of the Ethics Institute at Dartmouth
College in the US,said it was unlikely that an
eight-week-old pregnancy would lead to a birth.
So far all cloned animals have suffered
from some different serious disorders,many
of them dying soon after their births.
Doctors are opposed to human cloning
because they are worried about the welfare (福祉)
of the cloned child if there is one.
“There
are no benefits of cloned human beings, just
harm,”said Dr.Michael Wilks of the UK.

an experiment on cloning an eight-week-old
embryo.

In many countries today, laws protect
wildlife. In India, the need for such protection was realized centuries ago.
About 300 B.C.an Indian writer described forests that
were some what like national parks today. The
killing of beasts was carefully supervised(监视).Some
animals were fully protected.Within the forest, nobody was allowed to cut timber(wood for building),burn wood for charcoal,or catch animals for their furs.Animals that became dangerous to human
visitors were caught or killed outside the park so that other animals would not
become uneasy.
The need for wildlife protection is
greater now than ever before.About a thousand species of
animals are in danger of extinction, and the rate at which they are
being destroyed has increased. With mammals, for instance, the rate of extinction was about one species
every fifty years from A.D.1to 1800,but now it is about one species every
year.Everywhere, men are trying to solve the problem of
protecting wildlife caring for the rapid growth of the worlds population.

The
word pub is the short form for public house in Great
Britain. It is supposed to be the Englishmens favourite meeting place, where
they can get together with friends over a pint of beer and talk about football,
horse racing or business. Pubs are usually open from 11 a.m. to midnight.
You may notice that the pub is
the Englishmens meeting place. It is not quite respectable for a woman to go
into a pub alone . She must have a man to go with her. Perhaps thats partly
the reason why pubs depress me —— they are intended mainly to provide for male
interests.
Most Englishmen have their
favourite local, where they can escape from the pressures of family life or
work, and if they are lucky, they can tell their troubles to a pretty bar-girl.
Indeed many men dream of retiring from their 9 to 5 jobs and buying a little
country pub, where they imagine they will be the host of a seven night a week
party.

Why Are Bicycles So Popular In China?
Bicycles
are a convenient means of transportation.People
can go wherever they like by bike on a short trip.It
is easy to go to work or school by bike because most of the Chinese live not
far away from where they work or study.Riding
bicycles is also good exercise, which can help build people’s
bodies.
Whats more, riding bicycles can save energy.China has a population of more than 1,300 million. As
bicycles are not expensive, almost every family has one.Now each family in China has at least a
bike instead of a car. Thus a great deal of energy is
saved and serious air pollution is reduced.
Thats why bicycles are so popular in
China.
