window.
This was strange, because the light-house had been empty, unused and
__41__ for thirty years. It was stranger still---because I’d seen that
__42__ before. I couldn’t place it but it was, or had once been,
familiar to me. I opened my window and __43__ across.

missed her, and it’s your __53__, Commander!’
As the boat drew away, the face at the window faded. __54__
minute it was there, looking up. I could see the whites of the eyes. The __55__
it was gone.
Well, I didn’t rush to the light-house.
I knew that Leftis was dead. He died at sea in 1963 or ’64. But there’s one
other thing I ought to tell you: the motor-boat never reached Miros. It was
lost in a storm, with all the passengers.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Dr Wiseman started “the laugh lab”
project in September 2001. It is the largest study of humour. Participants(参加者)are invited to log on to the
laugh lab website, give a few personal details, tell their favourite jokes and
judge the jokes told by other people.
The project will last for a year, and
the organizers hope to finally discover the word’s funniest joke. But there is
also a serious purpose. The researchers want to know what people from different
nations and cultures find funny. And they want to find out the differences
between the male and female sense of humour. The idea is that if we want to
understand each other, we have to find out what makes us laugh.
This is a subject that has long interested
psychologists(心理学家) and
philosophers(哲学家). Most of
the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects
of us and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be
controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves.
By December 2001 over 10,000 jokes had
been submitted (提交). This gave
the scientists enough evidence (证据) to make early conclusions. It seems that men and women do have
different senses of humour, for instance.
“Our findings show the major
differences in the ways in which males and females use humour,” said Dr.
Wiseman. “Males use humour to appear srperior (优越) to others. While women are more skilled in languages and prefer
word play.”
Researchers also found that there
really is such a thing as a national sense of humour. The British enjoy what is
usually called “toilet humour”. But the French like their jokes short and
sharp: “You’re a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for $500?” “Yes. What’s the second
question?”
The Germans are famous for not having a
sense of humour. But the survey found that German participants were more likely
to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality. Perhaps that proves
the point. Is this joke funny? I don’t know, but let’s say yes, just to be
safe.
Dr Wiseman and his workmates also
submitted jokes created by computer. But none of those who took part in the
survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief. Computers already
seem like they can do everything. At least they should leave the funny stuff to
us.
56.Scientist started “the laugh lab” project____________________.

of humour.

D.About 10,000 jokes have been

I hear many parents complaining that
their teenage children are rebelling(反叛). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from
your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a
good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the
same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking
out bravely on their own, most of them are clutching at (hold firmly) one
another’s hands for reassurance (消除疑虑).
They claim they want to dress as they
please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in
music. But somehow they all end up huddled round listening to the same record.
Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is
doing it. They have come out of cocoon(蚕茧)--- into a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a
teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way.
Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. There days every teenager can
learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of
today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their
children. All this adds up to a great barrier(障碍) for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over.
The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead
of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is
collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at
once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself.
Popularity will come --- with the people who respect you for who you are.
That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.
60.The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to tell

things for themselves

each other

single-handed
D.are very much afraid of getting
lost

A thief who dropped a winning lottery
ticket(彩票) at the
scene of his crime has been given a lesson in honesty. His victim, who picked
up the ticket, then claimed the £25000 prize, managed to trace him, and handed over the cash. The
robbery happened when maths professor Vinicio Sabbatucci, 58, was changing a
tyre on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped to “to help”, stole
a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket
and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.
Next day, he saw the lottery results on
TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed the 60
million lire (里拉) prize. Then
he began a battle with his conscience. Finally, he decided he could not
keep the money despite having been robbed. He advertised in newspapers and on
radio, saying: “I’m trying to find the man who robbed me. I have 60 million
lire for him --- a lottery win. Please meet me. Anonymity (匿名) guaranteed.”
Professor Sabbatucci received hundreds
of calls from people hoping to trick him into handing them the cash. But there
was one voice he recognized --- and he arranged to meet the man in a park. The
robber, a 35-year-old unemployed father of two, gave back the suitcase and
burst into tears. He could not believe what was happening. “Why didn’t you keep
the money?” He asked. The professor replied: “ I couldn’t because it’s not
mine.” Then he walked off, spurning the thief’s offer of a reward.

Anybody running a company knows that a
well-planned conference can greatly improve the performance of that business.
The main reason for this is that it takes your employees away from the daily
workplace and offers them somewhere fresh for a short time. However, unless the
conference is well thought out it will not have the best results and you will
have wasted a great deal of money.
The first step is to find the right
place. Can your employees easily reach the conference center? Is it near a
railway station? Is it close to a good fast road? Has it plenty of suitable
parking space? If you are going to choose a hotel, then perhaps the hotel has
cheaper rates at weekends or, if it is a popular tourist area, midweek rates
may be cheaper.
Another important requirement is food
and drink. Breakfast is a time when people can relax before the day’s work
begins, but you may not want a long break for lunch in the middle of the day.
Buffet (自助) lunches
are very popular for this reason. Then there is dinner, which most employees
consider a reward for a day’s hard work!
Whatever your needs are, it is
essential to think ahead if you want a successful conference.
71.In this text,
the writer is trying to ___________.
A.complain about a bad conference
centre
B.describe what makes a good
conference centre
C.persuade employers to choose a
conference hotel
D.advise employees where to stay for
a conference
72.Why would
somebody read the text?
A.To find out about organizing
conferences.
B.To learn how to reward good
employees.
C.To find out about running a
business.
D.To learn some details about
conference centres.
73.What is very
important when choosing a conference centre?
A.Cheap food and drink. B.Free car parking.
C.Good transport connections. D.Popular tour areas.
74.Why does the
writer think a buffet lunch is a good idea?
A.It’s relaxing. B.It’s quick. C.It’s cheap. D.It’s tasty.
75.Which centre would the writer recommend (推荐) to an employer?
A. B.
C.
D.
