第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2.5分,满分50分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
When did you last see a polar bear(北极熊)?
On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended
a winter activity in
New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These
Polar Bears are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in
freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃,
and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the polar Bear Club
at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy
two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the
group; this is very important because there are so many different kinds of
people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice
a month from November through February.
Doctors do not agree about the medical effects
of coldwater swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in
which the bodys temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other
doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during
summer swimming be- cause the difference between the air temperature and water
temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with
the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their
favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system (循环系统)
because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold- water
swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who
turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-
water swimming.
The main benefits (or advantages) of cold- water
swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year- round; they
find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says, When I go into
the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.
56. The members of the
Polar Club must meet the following requirements except that

Without proper planning, tourism can cause
problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also
enjoyed by the inhabitants (居民)of a country, if tourists create (引起)too
much traffic, the inhabitants become angry and unhappy. They begin to dislike
tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help
the countrys economy(经济). It is important to think about the people of
a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a
country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also
advance the health and happiness of local(当地的)inhabitants.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism
grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism
industry. This means that other parts of the country s economy can suffer.
On the other hand, if there is not enough
tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great
deal of money to build large hotels, airports, first - class roads, and other
sup- port facilities (设施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, a
major international - class tourist hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand
dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owner
of the hotel lose money.
Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must
be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel,
electricity, sewers (阴沟) to handle waste and water. All of these
support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not
enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.60, Which of the following has most

hotels is very important

Planning is very important to tourism
61 ,Too much tourism

C. over-crowdedness of
places of interest
D. pressure(压力)on traffic
62. Not enough tourism
can cause ______.
A. more people to lose
their jobs B.
a decrease (减少)in tourist attractions
C. the high cost of
support facilities D.
a rise in price and fall in pay
63,The word handle
in the last paragraph most probably means ______
A. carry away
B. pick up
C. get in D.
take down
Soccer is played by millions of people all over
the world, but there have only been a few players who were truly great. How did
these players get that way -- was it through training and practice, or are
great players born , not made? First, these players came from
places that have had famous stars in the past -- players that a young boy can
look up to and try to imitate (模仿). In the history of soccer, only six countries
have ever won the World Cup -- three from South America and three from western
Europe. There has never been a great national team -- or a really great player-
from North America or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of
practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was
Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four.
Finally, many great
players come from the same kind of neighborhood --a poor, crowded area where a
boys dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a
rich, famous athlete or entertainer (表演者). For example,
Liverpool, which produced the Beatles, had one of the best English soccer teams
in recent years. Pele practiced in the street with a ball made of
rags. And George Best learned the skills that made him famous by bouncing (使……跳回)
the ball off a wall in the slums (贫民区) of Belfast
All great players have a lot in common, but that
doesnt explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian
streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some
unique(独特的) quality that makes them different from all the
others.
64,According to the
writer, which of the following statements is true?
A. Soccer is popular
all over the world, but truly great players are rare
B. Millions of people
all over the world are playing soccer, but only six countries have ever had
famous stars
C. Soccer is played by
millions of people all over the world, but only six countries from South
America and western
Europe have ever had great national teams
D. All over the world
soccer is one of the most popular games, but it seems least popular in North
America or Asia
65,Liverpool and
Brazilian streets are two geographic terms used to illustrate
A. where soccer players
get their way B. how
neighborhood affects a soccer players success
C. why they can produce
the best soccer teams
D. what a poor, crowded
area will provide a future soccer player with
66,In the last
paragraph the statement but only one became Pele indicates
that
A. Pele is the greatest
soccer player B. The greatest
players are born with some unique quality
C. Peles birthplace
sets him apart from all the others
D. The success of a
soccer player has everything to do with the family background
67,To get the way for a
great player, a series of factors are directly mentioned, except
A. age and birth
B. family and neighborhood
C. training and
practice
D. personality and character
There has been much international care and worry
following an article in the Indian newspapers that tigers in Bandipur in India
could be shot on sight by the army.
This shocking action was carried out because of
the sharp increase in tiger attacks in the area. At- tacks on humans have been
few until now, with only around 15 deaths caused by tigers in the past 22
years, hut in recent months there have been at least three deaths and two
injuries in Bandipur and, not surprisingly, the village people are calling for
action to be taken.
The States Chief Minister, Abdul Aziz believes
the army should be brought in because the States money is wasted on catching
and keeping the tigers. India has far too many tigers and they are better
if dead, he told local reporters.
The New Scientist Magazine reported that these
plans were denounced(指责)by Aditya Singh, the Indian Minister for
Science, Technology and the Environment, as these Indo-Chinese tigers are a
type of protected animals. But the article pointed out that this may not be
enough to protect them: the government file (文件) allows tigers to
be killed or caught if they threaten (威胁)human lives.
Conflict(冲突) Between People and
Tigers
The increase in human population means the
conflict between people and tigers will increase with- in all the tiger range
states. The tiger usually pays the final price~ The tigers natural living
place is cleared for farmland and local people and hunters kill the tigers
prey(猎物). In Bandipur the farm- lands now go right to the edge of
the forest and conflict between the tigers and the farmers working early in the
morning, is almost inevitable (不可避免的).
68, The army could
shoot tigers because
A. there were more
tigers than before B.
people dislike tigers
C. tigers attacked
people more often than before
D. tigers caused around
15 deaths in the past 22 years and they are better if dead

A. the government allowed the local village people to shoot
the tigers
B. the recent years fewer people have been killed by the
tigers
C. there are too many tigers in Bandipur

those village peoples lives
Remember
your first romantic disappointment? Remember the pain and unhappiness of breaking-up—uncertainty?
Winne recalls feeling very sad after her fist true love deserted (抛弃)her.
My mum came into my room carrying a beautiful nightgown and handed it to me,
gave me a hug and said, I know you are feeling very heartbroken. I
thought you could use something to make you feel beautiful right now. The
nightgown didn t make Winnes hurt go away, but she knew that her mother
under- stood and cared about her feelings.
As a parent, as much as you want to make it all better for
your teen, give them space. Tell him
or her that break-ups
are hard and you are there for him whenever he wants to speak to you. Then let
go.
Teenage girls often deal with break - ups by
talking on the phone with their friends or diving into the Internet for a long
chat. They review all the hurts and pains which are being cured. Boys react to
broken relationships differently. Boys often become angry since that,
unfortunately, is the only emotional(感情)choice that society
accepts for boys. Some boys hide their pain. Respect your teen, when a
relationship breaks up. It takes time to get over it, and the only way to get
through that is to get through it.
Sometimes teenagers get into trouble while
trying to feel accepted again or win back a loved one. Keep reaching out to
troubled teenagers. At first, teens will refuse a parents attempts to help.
Don t be afraid to insist.
Teen break-ups can cause heart- wrenching pain,
but sooner or later teenagers should be ready to date (约会) again.
How can you make your child toward a healthy relationship? Teens are likely to
meet others like themselves through activities. The secret to attracting good
boys or girls is to become your own independent person who feels good about who
she is and what shes about.

Dear Editor,
Im writing to tell you about the discussion we
ve had about whether senior high school students should have cell phones.
Opinions are divided on the question. 60% of the
students are for the idea of having a cell - phone. They believe that they can
stay in touch with friends and family no matter where they are. They can surf
the Internet, play games and listen to music with a cell- phone. Above all having
a cell phone makes them feel safer, since they can call for help when in
trouble.
On the other hand, 40% think they shouldnt have
cell- phones because teachers and students are disturbed and cant work if a
phone starts ringing in the classroom. Whats more, some parents worry that
their children will spend too much time and money on the phone calls.
