The girl looking for the job turned out to be
excellent but she ended up giving her employer a headache when it also turned
out that she used an unreal diploma(文凭).
In December, a Civil Administration Bureau in the city
of Wuhan, Hubei Province, announced that it needed five new staff members.
Some 120 people applied and took the exam. Applicants were required to show
proof of a college degree at least.
Met Jing beat everyone in the test and the interview.
When a follow-up check was done, however, her education certificate(证书)
was discovered to be an unreal one.
This was a bit of an embarrassment for the employers.
A dilemma, one might say. If she were hired because of her excellent
performance, she still wouldnt have the qualifications on paper. But, if she
were dropped because she didnt meet the education requirements, they would
lose a good worker. Tough problem!
While Meis future hangs in the balance, the public
having learned of the case got involved. Some people said the Bureau should
employ her, since results are the only important thing. After all, ability is
more important than a diploma, said one office worker.
Others, however, have attacked Meis dishonesty. They
said that morality was, after all, more important than talent, especially in
the case of a government position. Met wasnt honest,
so she shouldnt be hired.
But, Shen Ronghua, the head of the Shanghai Public Administration and
Human Resources Institute, tries to be a bit more philosophical.
There is still a sort
of diploma means this prejudice among people, Shen explains, Many
employers regard a diploma as the only sign of ability and talent.
So, with this in mind,
people may pay little attention to whether someone has real ability or not.
They turn to chasing a diploma instead. The unreal diploma is the natural
product of this thought.
The conclusion? China needs a new human resource
system. The new system will not define a person only by his or her diploma,
Shen says.

A lot of us lose life’s tough battles by starting a frontal(正面的) attack—when a touch of humor
might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who
hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum(最后通牒) about being late on the job.
Although there was a good reason for Sam’s a being late—serious illness at home—he
decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn’t work any longer. His
supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal
speech.
Yes, the boss
was, Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room(更衣室); everyone was hard at work. Sam’s
supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his
hand. “How do you do!” he said. “I’m Sam Maynard. I’m applying for a job.
Which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird
get the worm?”
The room
exploded in laughter while the supervisor clamped off a smile and walked
back to his office. Sam Maynard had saved his job—with the only tool that could
win, a laugh.
Humor is a most
effective, yet frequently neglected(忽略), means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can
be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”, criticizing,
getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some
jobs, it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so
sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe
that comedians(喜剧演员) on
television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance(忍受力) than people in any other forum.
61. Why was Sam late for his job?
A. Because he
was ill.
B. Because he
got up late.
C. Because he
was caught in a traffic jam.
D. He was busy
applying for a new job.

saved his job with humor

3 means ________.
A. tried to hold
back B. tried to set

A. Many lose
life’s battles for they are lacking in a sense of humor.
B. It wasn’t the
first time that Sam came late for his work.
C. Sam was
supposed to come to his office at 8:30.
D. Humor is the
most effective way of solving problems.
My parents were in a huge argument, and I was really upset about
it. I didnt know who I should talk with about how I was feeling. So I asked
Mom to allow me to stay the night at my best friends house. Though I knew I
wouldnt tell her about my parents’ situation, I was looking forward to gelling
out of the house. I was in the middle of packing up my things when suddenly the
power went out in the neighborhood. Mom came to tell me that I should stay with
my grandpa until the power came back on.
I was really
disappointed because I felt that we did not have much to talk about. But I knew
he would be frightened alone in the dark. I went to his room and told him that
Id stay with him until the power was restored. He was quite happy and said,

What is? I
asked.
To talk, you and
I ” he said. To hold a private little meeting about what we’re going to
do with your mom and dad, and what were going to do with ourselves now that were
in the situation we are in.
But we cant do
anything about it. Grandpa, I said, surprised that here was someone with
whom I could share my feelings and someone who was in the same
boat as I was.
And thats how the
most unbelievable friendship between my grandfather and me started. Sitting
Acre in the dark, we talked about our feelings and fears of life — from how
fast things change, to how they sometimes dont change fast enough. That night,
because the power went out, I found a new friend, with whom I could safely talk
about all my fears and pains, whatever they may be. Suddenly, the lights all
came back on. Well, he said, I guess that means youll want

and took them to a neighbor who was sick in bed. Every day I tried to do something
nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy. Today, I don’t know of

Shopping is not as simple as you
may think! There are all sorts of tricks at play each time we reach out for
that particular brand of product on the shelf.
Coloring, for example, varies according to what the producers are
trying to sell. Health foods are
packaged in greens, yellows or browns because we
think of these as healthy colors.
Ice cream packers are often blue and expensive goods, like
chocolates, are gold or silver.
When some kind of pain
killer was brought out recently, researchers found that the colors turned
the customers off because they
made the product look weak and ineffective. Eventually, it came on the market in a dark blue and white
package ----blue, because we think of it as safe, And white as calm.
The size of a product can attract a shopper. But
quite often a bottle doesn’t contain as much as It appears to.
It is believed that the better
–known companies spend, on average, 70 per cent of the total cost of the
product itself on packaging!
The most successful producers know that it’s not
enough to have a good product. The
founder of Pears soap, who
for 25 years has used pretty little girls to promote their goods, came to the conclusion: “Any fool can make soap, but
it takes a genius to sell it.”
72. Which of the
following may trick a shopper into buying a product according to the text?
A. The cost of its package
B. The price of the product
C. The color of its package D.
The brand name of the product
73. The underlined
part “the color turned the customers off” (in para.3) means the colors__.
A. attracted the customers strongly
B. had weak effects on the customers
C. tricked the customers into shopping
D. caused the customers to lose interest
74. Which
of the following is the key to the success in product sales?
A. The way to promote the goods.
B. the discovery of a genius
C. The team to produce a good producer
D. The brand name used by successful producers.
75. Which
of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Choice of good
products
B. Disadvantage
of products
C. Effect of packaging on
shopping D.
Brand names and shopping tricks

To many people, the word Hollywood
has two meanings. Hollywood is an area in Los Angels. Hollywood is also the
American movie industry.
Hollywood was just farmland at the
beginning of this century. Early American movies were made in other places; for
example, in New York and Chicago.
In 1917, a director was making a
movie in Chicago. Because of cold weather, he couldn’t finish the movie. He
took a trip to southern California, and there he found just the weather and
scenery he needed to finish his movie. The director realized that southern
California was the perfect place for making movies. The next year his company
built a movie studio in Hollywood. Other companies followed. Before long nearly
all important American movies studios were in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
The next thirty years were Hollywood’s
gjreatest years. Thousands of movies were made, most by a few large and
powerful studios. Directors, actors and writers worked for these studios. They
made some movies that today are considered great art.
Hollywood, the area in Los Angels,
also reached its high point in these years. Many famous and glamorous(富有魔力的)movie stars, like Bette Davis and Clark Gable,
lived in Hollywood.
Today, Hollywood is not what it was.
More movies are made outside of Hollywood. Many studios have moved. The movie
stars have also moved to areas like Beverly Hills and Malibu.
But visitors to Hollywood today can
go to the famous Chinese Theater and see the footprints and autographs of movie
stars. They can go down the Walk of Fame, on Hollywood Boulevard, and see the
golden stars in the sidewalk.

Should
students make friends on line ?Some people say yes .The internet helps make
many friends .Chatting on line ,students can more freely express their feelings
and opinions ,and even get help with their foreign language studies .
Others
,however, think students should not .They say making friends on line is a waste
of time ,which should be spent more meaningfully on study .Besides ,some
students get cheated on line.
It
is my opinion that students should place their study ,health and safety before
other things .As for friendship ,we can readily find it in our classmates and
other people around us.
