IV. 阅读理解 (每小题2分,共20分)
(A)
There are now about 376 million people who
speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have
learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are one billion people
learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in
English.
Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should
we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common
language, across countries and cultures(文化)? Or should we worry about the dangers of
mono-culturalism, a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the
same food and listen to the same music?
Does it matter if an increasing number of
people speak the same language? On the contrary(相反), I would have thought-although I have never
accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there
would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India (where many of them speak at least
some English) and Pakistan (the same situation with India)...
If we all speak English, will we then all
start eating McDonalds burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主导地位的), will it kill other
languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised
by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more
other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German
as well.
When we discussed this on Talking Point a
couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic email from a listener in
Ireland. The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe its like a
rose, he said, But who would ever want their garden just full of
rose?
Well, I love roses, and I think they make a
beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few
roses, you dont necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more
people want to plant English roses, that s fine by me.
56. By saying Ask the people of
India... and Pakistan(in Paragraph 3), the author is trying to show that
.
A. speaking the same language doesnt
necessarily bring peace
B. wars can destroy the relationship between
two countries
C. English doesnt kill other languages
D. English is widely used in the world
57. What does garden in the last
two paragraphs stand for?
A. Language. B. Family. C. The world. D. The
Earth.
58. This passage is mainly about _______ .
A. why English has become a global language
B. how many people in the world speak English
C. how people in the world learn English as a
foreign language
D. how to learn English well

The worst tourist in the world is Nicholas
Scotti of San Francisco. Once he flew from the U.S. to his home town in Italy
to see someone at home. The plane made a one-hour stop to get oil at Kennedy
Airport of New York. As he thought he had arrived home, Mr Scotti got off the
plane. He thought he was in Rome.
When nobody were there to meet him, Mr Scotti
thought maybe they were held up by heavy traffic. While looking for their
addresses, Mr Scotti found that the old Rome had changed a lot.
Many old buildings were replaced by high modern ones.
He also found that many people spoke English
instead of Italian and that many street signs were written in English.
Mr Scotti knew very little English, so he
asked a policeman (in Italian) the way to the bus station. He happened to meet
a policeman who was also born in Italy and answered him in the same language.
After twelve hours traveling round on a bus,
the driver handed him over to a second policeman. He asked the policeman why
the Rome police employed(雇佣) so many people as policemen speaking English instead of Italian.
Mr Scotti did not believe he was in New York
when he was told so.
To get him on a plane back to San Francisco,
he was sent to the airport in a police car with sirens (警报)on. Look, said
Scotti to his interpreter, I know Im in Italy. Thats how they
drive.

nobody met him because _______.
A. he was in New York
B. He was in Rome

Rome?

61. At last Mr Scotti ________ .
A. knew he did something wrong
B. still thought he was in Rome

Beldon and Canfield are two seashore towns,
not far apart. Both towns have many hotels, and in summer the hotels are full
of holiday-makers and other tourists.
Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze
Hotel in Beldon. The next day, this news appeared on page two of the towns
newspaper. The Beldon Post:
Late last night firemen hurried to the
Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager
said that a cigarette started the fire. We say again to all our visitors.
Please dont smoke cigarettes in bed. This was Beldons first hotel
fire of five years.

words on page one :

late to save clothing, bedclothes and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An

bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I put my bedside light
on, heard a funny noise from the lamp. We are glad to tell our readers
that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield.
What are the facts, then? It is never easy to

10. You surely know the silk worm spits silk.
But have you heard that a special cat in South America can spit silk like silk
worm? People there call it silk cat. There is an opening to each of
the pair of the cavities in its mouth where the silk liquid is stored. When the
cavities are full, the cat stops eating for two weeks and then begins to spit
silk. During this time the cat becomes very short-tempered and keeps running
while spitting silk. The local people usually tie it to a pole buried in the
ground, so it runs round and round the pole and the silk it spits is wound on
the pole. A cat usually spits twice a year. The cat silk is thicker
than the silk of the silk worm but very tough. It can be used to weave into
very tough silk cloth.

短文改错:
1.was→am。时态错误。2.去掉for 。处于句子中间表示时间状语的 for省略不用,尤其是表几次时。3.match →matches。应当用matches。因为这是经常性的比赛。4.Play →Playing 。这里是动名词短语作主语。5.give →gives 。gives与上边的 makes是并列谓语,都应当用单数第三人称形式。6.√。7. instead后加of。 instead是副词,这儿应当用介词短语instead of。8.important
→importance。应当用名词,而不能用形容词。9. captain 前加the。the在这儿表特指。10.they →we。这是个逻辑性错误。
书面表达:
Is Wealth Most Important?
About wealth there are different opinions
among people. Some people think wealth is the most important thing in life, but
others believe there are things more important than wealth.
I think happiness, health, friendship and so
on are the most important things in the world. Wealth can buy us some material
things but no one can buy happiness with money. Those who try their best to earn
money will lose many things in their life and cant enjoy happiness. Without
happiness, what is the use of money?
Wealth alone will not make us happy, and
without wealth we can still enjoy our life. So I think wealth is not the most
important thing in the world.
