will most Americans.Promptness is

the time that has been made or calls up to explain his delay.
The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do

The well-mannered Englishman at table holds and
keeps his knife in his right hand, his fork in his left, cuts his meat and
presses his vegetables into his fork. The well-mannered American first cuts up
all his meat, then places his knife down on the right of his plate, takes his
fork in his right hand and with his fork lifts the food to his mouth. He will
have coffee half way through his dinner before the pudding. The Englishman
drinks his coffee after the dinner. And,of course, Americans are coffee-drinkers rather than
tea-drinkers.The Englishman would be shocked at the Americans idea of how
tea should be made.
The popular method to make tea is to take a cup or
a pot of hot water and drop it into a cotton bag with tea leaves in it.For a
change they will sometimes put a pan of water on the electric stove and, just as
the water gets warm, throw in a few teaspoonfuls of tea and then pour the
mixture into a tea pot, pour it from there into a cup and drink it without turning a hair.

Three foreign gentlemen came up to a bus-stop in
London.About five minutes later the bus which they waited for came along. They
prepared to get on it.Suddenly there was a noise behind them.People rushed on
to the bus and tried to push them out of the way.Someone shouted at them. The
three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and embarrassed. No one had told them
about the British custom of waiting for a bus so that the first who arrives at
the bus-stop is the first person to get on the bus.
Learning the language of a country is not
enough. One should know as much as possible about the manners and customs of
different countries.Youll be surprised how different they can be from your
own.For example,in India, people consider it impolite to use the left hand for
passing food at table. In many places you might see a person shaking his head at
another to express his disagreement, but in Bulgaria a shake of the head means
Yes and a nod No.In Europe it is quite usual to cross
your legs when sitting talking to someone, but in Thailand,it is considered
impolite.

When people become good at doing the
things they like to do, they have found themselves.
Many young people are good at doing
things they do not like; many other young people would like to do something
that they are not good at. Also many do not think they are good at anything and
do not know what they would like to do. None of them are happy.
It is impossible to decide whether one
likes something until one has tried it. Trying something new is important.
Give each idea a fair chance. If you
have decided to try out something new, and also decided how long you will stick
to it, you can make a fair decision.
The best thing to judge is not the
final goal but the work which takes you to reach the goal. Almost everybody
would like to be highly skilled in something, but becoming highly skilled in
anything calls for a great deal of time and work. Finding oneself means not
only discovering what one is good at and what one likes; it also means
discovering what one is not good at and what one does not like.
So trying something and failing can
have its good side. It tells you that you are not fit for that particular aim
and should not use it as your goal.
76. What does the underlined word
fair in Paragraph 4 mean?

the following statements is TRUE ?
A. Becoming skilled in
something is quite easy.
B. If someone finds himself,
he knows his strong points and weak points.
C. People can decide whether
they like something before they try it.
D. Failure is always bad for
people.
78 Why do people say failing is a good
thing ?
A Because you can try again
.
B Because you can decide
your proper goal in your life .
C You can try out something
new .
D You can be good at
something .
79 The best thing to judge whether you
have made a fair decision is _______ .
A the final goal
B the work which takes you
to reach the goal.
C whether you like something
D whether you are good at it
.
80. Whats the best title for the
passage?
A. Find oneself
B.
Failure is a good thing
C. Interest is important D.
Seize every chance

Dear
Mary,
Its May
Day today and I have a day off. Im going to tell you something about China.
In our
country cars are driven on the left side of the road, but here on the right
side. Many people in London go to work by car, while most people in Beijing go
to work by bike. The climate of Beijing is better than ours, and people here
enjoy fine weather for long periods. But London has so many cloudy days.
Students here work hard at their lessons and a lot of people can speak English.
Its a pity that students in our country dont make full use of their time and
so few of them know Chinese.
Thats
all for today. Please write to me.
Yours lovely,
Peter

M: Whats the matter with it?
W: Well, for one thing, the story is poorly constructed. And the
characters in the story are more like paper dolls than living people.
M: Thats strange. Usually that writer does a good job. Ive read
four of his books and thought they were all well done.
W: Ive enjoyed reading his books, but he failed this time.

Text 10
There is a strange area in
the Atlantic Ocean called the Bermuda Triangle (百慕三角洲). People have been mad about it for years because of the mysterious
disappearance of many ships and planes in the area. There is hardly any
agreement about the cause of these disappearances. In fact, it is difficult to
find any agreement about how far away it spreads. Yet most people say that the
triangle s furthest northern point is Bermuda, its furthest western point is
up to Florida, and its eastern point may stretch out as far as the coast of
Africa. A few researchers prefer the northern point to be in the Boston area.
