第三部分:阅读理解(共对小题;每小题2分,满分物分)

Have you ever thought of what
the polluted air might be doing to your health? An oxygen bar in New York is giving
its customers a clean choice--- 20 minutes of 99 percent pure oxygen for
$16.This oxgygen treatment, the
owner of the bar says, will purify your body, and make you healthier and
happier.
Doctors, however, do not agree to
this treatment, and they call it a shame. Pure oxgygen, they say, does nothing
to purify your body. On the contrary, it can be harmful--- particularly for
people with serious lung disease.
Why do we breathe? We breathe for
two reasons. First, our bodies “tell” us to take in oxygen. Second, we need to
breathe out carbon dioxide.
But people with serious lung
disease often lose the ability to respond to the carbon dioxide “signal”. Their
bodies only tell them to breathe when they need oxygen. Give them pure oxygen
and their bodies think they don’t need to breathe. So they don’t. Their cells
fill up with carbon dioxide, which won’t cause any harm.
Even if you don’t have a serious lung
problems, breathing pure oxygen for a long period of time can be dangerous.
After 24 hours, it can cause fluid to build up in your lungs, leading to lung
collapse. But to breathe pure oxygen for a short period of time, say 20 minutes
at an oxygen bar, perhaps won’t cause any harm.
And the trend is on, with oxygen
bars opening one after another in New York and other big cities in the world.
Many people, especially young people, go there to purify their bodies. You must
be at least 16 to get in. After knowing what some doctors say about oxygen
bars, would you still want to go there to have such a dangerous treatment?
56.Which
of the following statements about oxygen bars is TRUE according to the passage?
A.They
are disappearing
B.Doctors say that the oxygen treatment
can purify your bodies
C.Oxygen bar owners say that oxygen
treatment is good to your health
D.Customers say that the price for the
oxygen treatment is too high
57.Why
will people with serious lung illness die if breathing pure oxygen?
A.Because
the air they breathe is polluted.
B.Because
pure oxygen burns their lungs.
C.Because
their hearts will collapse.
D.Because
they no longer breathe out carbon dioxide.
58.What
makes oxygen bars popular in big cities according to the passage?
A.
People
like to follow a new trend.
B.
Everything
popular in New York is followed by other cities.
C.
Air
in big cities is polluted.
D.
Carbon
dioxide is damaging our health.
59.

A.

are harmful
B.

are useful
C.
They
have the right to exist.
D.

How we look and how we appear to
others probably worries us more when we are in early twenties than at any other
time in our life. Few of us are satisfied with ourselves as we are, and few are
brave enough to ignore the demands of fashion.
Most fashion magazines or TV
advertisement try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or
behave in a certain manner. If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new
people with confidence, or a belief in ourselves, and deal with every situation
confidently. Changing fashion, of course, does not refer just to dress. A
barber today does not cut a baby’s hair in the same way as he used to, and
girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers aadn grandmothers did.
The advertisement show us the latest fashionable styles and we are often under
pressure to followed his example.
What causes fashions to change? Sometimes
convenience or practical necessity or just the liking of an important person
can form a fashion. Take hats, for example, in cold climates, early buildings
were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent
times, the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat
industry by not wearing hats: most Americans followed his example.
There is also a cyclical pattern
in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and American, short skirts became
fashionable. After World War Two, they dropped to ankle(脚踝)length. Then they got shorter
and shorter until the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few more years, shirts
became longer again.
Today, society is much freer and
easier than it used to be. It is no longer necessary to dress like everyone
else. Within reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you like
instead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The popularity of
jeans and the “untidy” look seems to be a reaction against the increasinglly
expensive fashions of the top fashion houses.
60.What
does “ fashion” mean in the passage?
A.时尚 B.时装 C. 时代 D.形式
61.We
worry most about our appearance at the age between_________
A.
15-20

C.26-30

62.According

B.

we want to impress people and get a job through the intervie, we should ignore
fashion.
C.
Short
skirts used to be in fashion before World War II
D.

The first scientists to visit Mars are
not going to be flesh and blood humans, but metal robots.
This summer, NASA(美国国家宇航局) plans to start the Mars
Exploration Rovers Mission, (MER, 火星漫游者探险任务)sending a pair of robotic
twins into space. If all goes well, the six-wheeled rovers will be rolling
around the Red Planet sometime in January 2004.
NASA first sent a rover to Mars in
1997. It proved that the technology could get to, and land on the planet. This
time, the MER robot will act as a scientist and look for any signs of
water---past or present.
Both MER robots will be delivered into
space by a rocket. Wrapped in a landing shell, an airbag will protect them when
the shell hits the planet’s surface. Once it lands, the shell will open, and
the rovers will come out.
“What we tried to do was take everything
you’d find in a field scientist’s bag on Earth and make a robotic scientist for
Mars,” said Steven Squyres, a NASA scientist.
Each carries nine cameras, which
will send pictures of Mars back down to Earth. One camera sits on the tip of
each robot’s arm. This arm is the same size as that of a human adult. Every
time the robot moves, the cameras feed images to its computer. The computer
then decides whether an obstacles can be dealt with or should be avoided. And
if it gets in a real trouble, the rover phones home for instructions.
“The rule is: ‘Don’t go over
anything larger than your wheels,’ ”said Squyres. The wheels on each of the
180kg rovers stand at about 25cm tall. And they move slowly – around 5cm per
second. The MER robots are able to dig, in any rock, holes about 45mm wide and
5mm deep. This will allow researchers to study material that has been untouched
by the extreme Martian weather.
During Mars’ nights, MER robots
can “sleep” up to 18 hours. But sometimes they’ll have to work late and conduct
experiments in the dark. They will roll on Mars for 90 days.
65.The
purpose of sending MER robots into space is to _________
A.
let
them act as scientists to look for signs of water on Mars
B.
let
them bring the living things from Mars for scientific study
C.
prove
that humans have the technology to send them to Mars
D.

66.The
fourth paragragh mainly tells us__________
A.
how
the MER robots will be wrapped
B.
how
the MER robots will land on Mars
C.
how
the MER robots will be sent into space
D.
how
the MER robots will do after landing on Mars
67
If the MER robots have some trouble on Mars, ___________
A.
they
can not work any more
B.
they
will ask for instructions from Earth
C.
the
scientists on Earth can not help them
D.
new
MER robots will be sent to help them
68.Which

China is to aim at the improvement
of housing for senior citizens in the coming years, according to China
Population News
Central and local governments at
all levels will increase investment in housing construction. Steps will be

Reports from the Ministry of Civil
Affairs show that there are only 730,000 senior citizens in the country who

I’ve recently made a survey among 26 boys
and 26 girls in my class about their purposes of getting on the Internet. The
girls’ favourite is chatting, but few boys like it. What the boys like to do
most is playing games and the girls also like it. Both boys and girls like to
read news or send e-mails on the Internet. Maybe they think it’s the most
convenient way to get information or keep in touch with friends. As for
studying , the numbers of boys and girls are equal, but altogether only several
of them will use Internet as a tool to study.
