Bending
over his radio, the perturbed Japanese soldier adjusted his earphone.
What were those strange sounds that he couldn’t recognize? What tricks were the
Americans on the other side of the Pacific island up to this time? He motioned
hurriedly for an interpreter(翻译).
Miles
away in a clearing surrounded by dense jungle, a group of soldiers stood guard
as American Indian soldiers quickly translated messages from English into
another language. In moments, one of these specially trained soldiers stepped
to radio, adjusted the frequency dials, and began his second transmission in
the language of the Navaho.
The
Japanese never were able to crack(破译) the code of the Navaho Indian during the Second World War. Many
Americans lives were saved because no one in the Japanese Army was able to
speak the language of the American Indians who served their country so well.

The newspaper seller was a clean, neat man, of about forty with a
rather serious, unsmiling face. He didn’t speak much to the customers or to his
helpers, but when he did he spoke slowly and quietly, as if to himself. He
believed in efficiency, not conversation. and this was how the office workers,
rushing to catch their trains, preferred it.
It had been
a good day. Lunch-time had been warm and sunny, and many people had bought
magazines to read outside with their sandwiches. Now it was cold rainy, and
people wanted an evening paper for a cheerless joyless journey ahead and a dull
evening indoors.
At 6:30,
with the main rush over, he started to collect the money together and count it.
Then he left the stand and went home. It was the assistant’s turn this evening
to look after it till eight o’clock, when it would be packed away for the
night. His large white Mercedes was in the private car park of a large
government building. He’d parked there for six months, pretending to be part of
a heating firm working in the building. They would find out about him soon, and
he’d have to park in a garage again, which was annoying. Their charges were far
too high. A couple of junior clerks, regular customers, happened to see him
getting into his car. “must be a lot of money in papers, eh?” one of them
shouted. He just smiled coldly in reply, and got into the car, placing the bags
of money on the floor.
He thought
about the clerks on the way home. Like the majority of his customers, despite
their white shirts and dark suits, they probably made in a week as much as he
could make in a good day.

When
we think of creative people the names that probably come to mind are those of
men such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Pablo Picasso, i.e. great
artists, inventors and scientists---a selected and exceptionally gifted body of
men with rare talent and genius. The tendency to regard creativity and
imaginative aspects inherent(固有的) in the solution of many of the tasks we regularly have to
face---the discovery and development of new methods and techniques, the
improvement of old methods, existing inventions and products.
Everyone
has creative ability to some degree. Creative thinking involves posing oneself
a problem and then originating or inventing a solution along new and
unconventional lines. It involves drawing new analogies(类似), discovering new combinations,
and new applications(应用) of things that are already known. It follows, then, that a creative
person will exhibit great intellectual curiosity and imagination. He will be
alert and observant with a great intellectual curiosity and imagination. He
will be alert and observant with a great store of information which he will be
able to sort out and combine, in the solution of problems. He will be
emotionally receptive to new ideas and will be less interested in facts than in
their implications. Most important of all, he will be able to communicate
uninhibitedly(不受约束的) and
will not be too concerned about other people’s reaction to his apparently
“crazy” notions. People called the Wright brothers mad but it did not stop them
from becoming the first men to construct and fly a heavier –than-air craft.
63.The author believes that creative
thinking ____.
A.is only possessed by great
artists
B.requires rare
talent and genius
C.is needed in the solution of many
problems D.belongs to a
lucky few
64.In order to solve scientific
problems, people ____.
A.should not be afraid of what others
think B.should be mad
C.must possess crazy notions D.should have inhibitions
65.Creative thinking involves _____.
A.drawing new pictures of old
things B.observing the actions of great people
C.finding the problem and originating
a solution D.discovering new emotions
66.A creative person should _____.
A.not be interested in facts B.look at facts for what they imply
C.be emotional when he looks at
facts
D.be more interested in applying new
ideas than in facts
D
This is one of the most tasty ways
of cooking carrots, and also the most sensible. Root vegetables easily absorb
fat. By cooking not in water but in butter, you help to conserve nourishment.
You
need a thick saucepan with a really tightfit lid. (This is essential because
the carrots cook in the steam from their own moisture, and they produce so
little steam that none of it must escape.)
COOKING
TIME
Sliced
old carrots: 10-20 minutes; whole new carrots: up to 45 minutes
INGREDIENTS
Carrots ,
about 1 teaspoon of butter, seasoning, a very small amount of sugar, chopped
parsley(西芹).
METHOD
1. “Scrub”
and peel the carrots and cut older carrots into even slices, not too thick. New
carrots can be left whole.
2. Heat
enough butter to cover the bottom of the pan well. When it is hot but not
smoking, add the carrots.
3. Add salt
and pepper, but not too much because , in this way of cooking, none of the
seasoning’s flavor will be lost.
4. Cover
with lid and cook over a gentle heat, shaking the pan occasionally so that the
carrots do not stick or burn. Sliced carrots will take 10-20 minutes to become
tender according to thickness. Whole new carrots may take up to 45 minutes.
5. Sprinkle
lightly with the sugar.… this helps to bring out the natural flavor of the
carrots. Also sprinkle with coarsely(大块地) chopped parsley if you like the extra color and flavor.
67.A tightfit lid is needed to ____.
A.prevent steam from escaping B.prevent the carrots from escaping
C.conserve sauce
D.let moisture escape
68.The underlined word “scrub” means
____.
A.wash with a brush B.scrape with a knife
C.remove the skin of the carrots D.cut with knife
69.Not too seasoning should be added
because ____.
A.a lot of salt and pepper will not
be lost B. steam will not be lost
C.its taste will not be lost
D.not too much salt and pepper will
not be lost
70.How long will the thickly sliced
carrots take to become tender?
A.20 minutes B.10-20 minutes C.10 minutes D.45 minutes

Harvard
University is on the both sides of the Charies River. The old institution of
higher learning in the United States was founded in 1636. In 1638 it was named
for John Harvard, its first founder. During the 1640s the college was enlarged
although it was short of money. Meant to be an institution for the education of
Puritan ministers(清教徒牧师), it grew to be an institution of general education, and new and
more subjects and policies(政策) were introduced. In the 18th century, particularly
under John Leverett(1708-1724), the number of the students and campus equipment
increased while the religious(宗教) color decreased. In its early years, the college was largely
supported by the English colony and the New England community as a whole, but
support soon came in the form of gifts, and in 1823 the state money was
received for the last time. Under Charles W. Eliot, the college became a great
modern University. Its basic courses improved and enlarged, the graduate School
was set up for those who finished their four-year undergraduate study, and the
law and medical schools were recognized. Eliot is also famous for his
introduction of the elective system at Harvard. Besides Harvard College, the

science(1872), education (1920), engineering(1935), reorganization of Lawrence
Science School of 1847, public administration(1935). Harvard also has schools of
business administration(1980), medicine(1782), public health(1922), and dental
health(1941). Radcliffe College for women is connected with Harvard; its
students are taught by Harvard professors and receive diplomas given by
Harvard. The university library, among the nation’s finest, houses over 8
million volumes, and the Fogg Museum Art is one of the finest university
museums in the world. Harvard is closely connected with a large number of
